Just read in another post that Ohio has a hundred dollar hybrid licensing fee. Any other states have this? Also with all the EVs coming out how are these states going to handle the road tax?

Here in Alabama there is no extra charge for a Hybrid, And most states are the same. Now that being said there is for a plug in and or ev!

NJ has neither. But a poster from Ohio says the have a hundred dollar fee for hybrids. I would be we are going to see more of this as the .ore efficient cars are going to reduce the amount of money they get on fuel tax.

My son bought a 2021 Mach E GT in Jan. and he had to pay a $150 EV fee to license it in Indiana. I don't know yet if they have a fee for hybrids.

As we transition to EVs (and hybrids) fuel tax revenue will decline. States are well aware of this and are actively looking at how to recover that income. Oregon tested a mileage fee system some years ago but there were some privacy concerns.

We will end up with some combination of licensing fee or mileage fee eventually.
  • Mileage fees have privacy issues and are complex because how do you account for miles driven in a different state?
  • Licensing fees would be astronomical if they had to offset the complete fuel tax.
No easy answers. Enjoy your EV or hybrid while it lasts, the states will catch up eventually.

Hybrid and Plug-In Electric
After January 1, 2020:

Registration applications for a hybrid vehicle will be assessed an additional $100 fee per registration year.
Registration applications for an electric vehicle will be assessed an additional $200 fee per registration year.
The fee is charged when a qualifying vehicle is registered for the first time, and for all subsequent registration renewals.

Vehicles renewed for multiple years will be charged the fee for each year of the registration period.

Effective October 22, 2020, fuel type fees will be prorated based on the number of months for which the vehicle is registered when a transaction is not for a full calendar year.

Hybrid

A passenger car with a combustion engine and a battery cell energy system that cannot be recharged via an external source of electricity but can be recharged by other vehicle mechanisms that capture and store electric energy
Model year 2009 or newer
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identifies the vehicle’s fuel type based upon the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and model year
Plug-in Electric

A passenger car powered wholly or in part by a battery cell energy system that can be recharged via an external source of electricity.
Model year 2009 or newer
NHTSA identifies the vehicle’s fuel type based upon the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and model year
Fuel Type Calculation

The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) utilizes a VIN Decoding Program provided by NHTSA to determine a vehicle’s fuel type.
Self-Declare

If your vehicle’s fuel type cannot be decoded by NHTSA (fuel type is ‘unknown’) at the time of renewal, you will receive a Fuel Type Required for Vehicle Registration Renewal letter (BMV 4641) notifying you to renew at a local Deputy Registrar or at OPLATES.com and self-declare your fuel type.
If your vehicle’s fuel type cannot be decoded by NHTSA (fuel type is ‘unknown’) during a renewal transaction at a deputy registrar, you must complete an Unknown Vehicle Fuel Type Affidavit for Registration (form BMV 4740).
Dispute

If you believe the fuel type determination is incorrect, you must pay the fee at the time of registration, and may then complete the Dispute of Vehicle Fuel Type for Registration (form BMV 4741) if you wish to dispute the fuel type determination.
The form and supporting documentation must be mailed to the address on the form. The BMV will review the supporting documents. If the BMV determines that NHTSA’s fuel type was incorrect, a refund will be issued to the registrant named on the vehicle registration. The BMV will notify the registrant by mail of the final decision.
If the fuel type fee is not paid, the registration will not be issued.
Ohio Revised Code: 4503.10, 4501.01

That's one of the reasons I ordered the EB instead of the hybrid, no savings. Too many vehicles, too little time.

I will point out that in 2020 - House Bill 1227 was introduced that would have repealed all EV and Hybrid supplemental fees.

:( It did not pass.

Yeah here in OR we have a fee for the annual registration that is based on the model of the truck or car you have. Those with straight EVs pay a bit more than those with a hybrid. They are trying to level the tax base for those that no longer pay or pay less for gas.

The car or truck still needs the road to get from point A to B and there is a cost to keep that infrastructure in shape. The cost is a pitance compared to a dented rim or broken glass because something went wrong as you were enjoying that MPG estimate on the display in front of you.

Indiana has a registration fee for hybrids and EV's. $50 for a hybrid and $150 for electric vehicles. I'm fine with it. As others have said they have to pay for upkeep to the roads and EV's especially and hybrids to a lesser degree are not paying gasoline taxes that pay for the roads.

I'll get a few grand off my EV here in California,

they just know once everyone drive a EV here they will charge even more for registration. While I have no special "fee" for the Maverick I'd guess it will be at least 150+ a year.
