Ford Escort had a mechanical odometer that shows 100000 on it too. Never got to the see a 200000 miles because I dropped the valve seat ruined the engine.

Butterfingers Yeah those SPI heads were more droppy than the previous 1.9 for some reason, I got 480,000km on my '95 ~300,000 miles only about 200k personally though, was having a string of high mileage years back then. Now doing a tenth of the miles so not likely to challenge for highest mileage maverick unless I'm still around in 40 years.

I never owned an AMC, vehicle, but I drove a few of them for the county in the 70's, but their mileage wasn't my concern. I can't testify to a 50 year old memory, but the 83 Chevy C10 pickup out in my driveway I just took a look at is showing 44K on the clock but it's actually 144K.
I can take a picture if you want to place a bet.
Have you ever owned any cars from the 60's?
With possibly a few exceptions, they rolled over at 6 integer digits.
I'm thinking they didn't expect them to last over 100K.

When I was young I bought them when they were on their last legs and fixed them up.

I always kinda wanted an AMC whether the classic Rambler Wagon or Eagle Vista... they were never common in my area though, never seen anything looking like an old AMC dealership closed up, never seen ads in old newspapers or dealer signs in historic photos of the towns around. It was historically very much a Chevy/GMC dominated area. Plus we didn't quite have the winters that made them more popular a 100 or two miles more northerly. Possibly they all bought Subaru franchises which explains why I am also in a massive hole of Subaru absence.

Anyway, see them from time to time a 3 or 4 hour drive away, but it's not close enough and they're not common enough any more to tire kick a few until I get the feel for what not to buy.

Some people reckoned the 4.0 could get you almost 30mpg if you had it geared right to be at about 1500ish at 55mph. I thought that was a little too optimistic, coming from the kind of people that you ask what their gas mileage is and they say they put $40 in it every Friday... no mention of miles, tank size etc etc.

There was one beauty appeared not too far away a few years ago, estate sale, beige and wood 78 wagon, about 30k on it, been on the road recently, only $2000, but I just couldn't get any money together at the time and unlikely they would have taken $532.35c and some Mickey Ds coupons.
