Hey everyone, my SurRon eBike has arrived and I need to pick it up from the shop ASAP so I wanted to get thoughts/opinions on the best way to do this (and subsequently transporting it around to different trails). This is my first time transporting a bike in truck bed so I'm a bit nervous and want to make sure I do it correctly/safely.

The bike is currently in it's original box at the shop with box dimensions of 65x13x33in weighing 150lbs.

The shop can also pull it from the box and assemble it but the fully assembled length of the bike is 73in. I'm told the weight of just the bike, with the swappable battery removed is under 100lbs.

I have a FOX Racing Tailgate Cover (typically used for mountain bikes) so I was thinking of having the shop assemble it and then when I pick it up I can just have the front fork+wheel over the tailgate with the cover underneath and then strap down the rear and body in the bed.

Ideally I could just angle it in the bed corner to corner and not have to put it over the tailgate but I'm doubting it will fit that way.

I know with the tailgate down I could fit the whole box in the bed but I'm worried about transporting anything with the tailgate down.

Also please note: I do NOT have a tow hitch.

Any advice on how a newbie can/should do this? Thanks in advance!

I've been interested in E-Bikes recently and read that the ebike should stay assembled (as with standard bikes, the front tire can be removed).

I placed my 58cm hybrid bike with the tailgate up to the 30" angle. I placed it front facing with the back wheel in a bike holder (placing the spindle in it, like at bike shops), then used bungee cords to secure it down using the D-rings (floor and tailgate area). If you don't have enough tie down points, then add them from the hardware store (fastener area).

This is just one way. OR just use the FOX tailgate cover (which I think is easier).

I'd say look for hitch carrier, harbor freight has good price aluminum ones.

While the Sur Ron can technically be set to e-bike level power output, it is definitely in the gray area of what I'd consider an e-bike!

As far as transport, I would think about this as transporting a lightweight motorbike. Ramping into the bed, tie down with straps is probably the best solution.

Hanging 150lbs + carrier weight is going to be a heavy load off the hitch. With that said, with my new rack (Saris MHS2) and 2 e-bikes the total weight is 200lbs +/- so I'm not really one to talk here!

Also, I saw you mentioned you don't have a hitch anyway, so a ramp/strap-down solution is the correct path.

We use a hitch carrier made specifically for fat tire e-bikes (cheaper than something from harbor freight). We have two bikes, both ~100lbs with all the batteries on (we take them off, as well as seat for transport, so closer to 75lbs each) and it has worked well so far.

thanks for the suggestions- i spoke to the shop as well on their recommendations and we are planning to ramp it up onto the truck bed and have the front fork+wheel over the tailgate with the cover underneath and then strap down the rear and body in the bed.

will definitely remove the battery to lighten the load on the tailgate but i'm hoping this will be an easy and secure method of transporting my new SurRon!

I will post pics and and update after I pickup- hopefully tomorrow if it's all assembled and ready to go!
