what is the best material for something exposed to the elements , subject to vibration, etc. like this?
Thanks @A.Bursell. I used PETG filament for these since I already had that material, but I think ABS has similar properties. I believe the main concern in this application would be thermal stability in which case either material should be fine.

As for vibration, I used an Ender 3 Pro printer which is dimensionally very accurate (within 5 thousandths). The fit turned out ok, but slightly looser than I hoped. I put some adhesive tape on the tabs and it snugged up just fine, but assuming your printer has similar accuracy, I’d recommend scaling to about 102% for a little tighter fit.

For anyone reading this, and considering buying a 3D printer, I am somewhat active in FPV drone forums, and the model suggested to me was the Sovol SV06. It's considered an easy to use, beginner friendly model. I use a Mac so the only slightly inconvenient part is I have to spin up a Ubuntu VM to "slice" my models up for 3D print files (gcode).. however otherwise it's been a great printer.

They're hanging around $289 but with Christmas coming up I'm sure there will be sales, also the SV07 just came out which might make the SV06 drop a bit in price.

You should download Cura ( https://ultimaker.com/software/ultimaker-cura/ ) This is a great slicer and a free download. I also use a Mac.

You got it to work? I'll have to try again. I tried once before but it was having issues installing, so I spun up a Ubuntu VM, loaded Cura and it worked. I have to run Ubuntu anyway for BetaFlight (software to program flight modules on drones). Now I just have to start learning better printing practices. I was just printing in TPU for awhile and then when I started switching between TPU and PETG I started having a few more issues. More annoyances (stringing) but occasional print failures.

Thingaverse is just a website for people to create models then upload them to share with other people you can't purchase anything through them.

You will need to contact a 3D printing service to actually have the model printed for you so you can purchase it. A quick Google search for 3D printing services should provide you with a lot of options.

@menno Zacharias
As an example I downloaded the file for the covers then went over to www.xometry.com were they offer an instant quote so I uploaded the files. To manufacture both covers in ABS they quoted $15.28 shipped with a lead time of 5 days.

Keep in mind I spent less than 5 minutes doing this. There maybe better/cheaper 3D printing services or another material besides ABS that you can choose.
University of Arizona in Tucson has a 3D printing service. I just requested a quote and got it back in less than an hour. $1 setup fee and $.40 in materials (PETG Black) for a total of $1.40 for both pieces. Lead time 5 days. I do have to pick it up though.

Might be worth checking into local universities or libraries.

That's awesome! Like I mentioned in the post that you quoted is that I only spent 5 minutes putting that price together and that there are most likely cheaper options available.

What resolution do I ask for?

  • Low Resolution (0.28mm)
  • Standard Resolution (0.2mm)
  • High Resolution (0.12mm)
  • Ultra Resolution (0.08mm)
What level of infill? 0% to 100%

Library has a printer. I'm just trying to learn what settings to ask for. For material I'm planning to use ECO-ABS. They also offer PETG and PLA.

The part is designed to snap into the openings, so you want it accurate to avoid it slopping around. If it is not excessive, ask for high or ultra high. Can't hurt.
The infill is the amount of material used on the 'inside' of the part. The outside will be 100% covered, but between the two surfaces, it can be filled with different patterns to use less material and still provide stiffness and strength from changing shape. There are multiple patterns of infill that can be used. As the printhead extrudes the melted material from a tiny hole, it can be set to leave room between the lines of print. I would look on one of the printer forums for examples of the available patterns and find one that is good for panel printing. I would make the 'lips' that snap in place solid, I think. Printing the remainder at 100% would add a lot of time to the print along with substantial increase in material. I have used a Creality a little bit and made a few things, but am by no means expert in 3D printing. I would look for a pattern that 'walks' its shape(rotates/moves) as it lays down rather than a straight 'stacked' reninforcement pattern.

Is anyone aware of a company that produces rubber groments in sizes that could be used to fill in the holes at the bottom of the tailgate and the back of the truck box?
There is already a thread on here about that, go read it I think they have a link to the company
