Background-
Hot Pepper Red ‘22 Maverick Lariat Hybrid. I’ve been looking around for an upgrade for the “dim” OEM halogen brake light/rear turn signal bulbs. Especially because a number of you have complained how this unibody truck is totaled as a result of a relatively minor rear end collision. In a nutshell, the pickings and choices are few. I have had the rear lighting recall already done.
If I am not mistaken, LasFit once offered an LED bulb, which they pulled off the market, due to hyper flashing issues. Model # T3 4257R only for the XL and XLT models. I never tried that bulb. However, all my other front turn signal, side marker and third brake lights are LasFit and are upgrades over the factory OEM halogen bulbs.
* The LED bulb that is working for me, at least for the first week (fingers crossed
) is a Chinese made Amazon bulb. Zonbeam brand. #4257 WT21/7W RED LED Rear Turn Signal/Brake Taillight for ‘21-23 F150. Also ‘23-25 F250. No mention of Maverick trucks by this brand. The fit is perfect without having to shave anything off to snap it into place. From what I have heard, if you try to install a white bulb under a rear red lens cover, you wind up with an orange rear brake light. That’s not for me.
* At least on my truck, I have found this CANBUS Error Free and No Hyper Flash bulb as advertised. It is longer than the OEM bulb, but still fits just fine. In addition, it has a built in cooling fan, so NO additional heat producing resistors are required to add on to your wiring - like some other bulbs. To my eyes they are a bit brighter than halogen bulbs in daylight conditions. However, not blindingly bright in daylight or night conditions. One advantage I did notice was the LED bulbs come on a fraction quicker than the halogen bulbs. Also quicker when the 4 way hazard lights are on.
- 2000 lumens. (OEM bulb 30-800 lumens). 28 watts. $100 for 4 bulbs. 100,000 hour rating.
* Another brand LED bulb that I tried that did NOT work in my truck was found at the Underground Lighting website. Bulb 4257 Red Color for a ‘21-24 F150.
- 1600 lumens. Fit fine. It also has a built in cooling fan and built in resistor only on the turn signal filament, unlike both filaments like some other LED bulbs. Was advertised as a CANBUS, no hyper flashing bulb. However, in my truck they hyper flashed Big Time. Or didn’t work at all. I may have got some defective ones. So back to Underground Lighting they go for a refund. I might add, I had high hopes, because these bulbs were BRIGHT - more so than the Amazon bulbs when I put on my 4 way hazard lights. Feel free to try these out. About $120-130 for 4. As they say “Your results may differ from mine.”
* Finally, About 12 months ago, I added a pulsing 3rd brake light on my truck that I recommend to anyone paranoid about being rear ended. There are several brands out there. Upon brake application, mine pulses 6-7 times before turning a solid red. Enough to be noticeable without being annoying. I can’t vouch for their legality in all states, but I haven’t been rear ended YET nor pulled over by the police here in Tennessee.
- One last thing, I want to see Ford switch to on these Mavericks are AMBER rear turn signals instead of red. A lot more visible under all conditions for only pennies more expense. I don’t ever want to hear the words, “I didn’t see your rear turn signals on.”
