In late 1967 early 1968 my older brother went to Joe Myers Ford in Houston ,Texas and bought a blue 1968 Shelby GT 500KR 428 super cobra jet single 4-barrel with a 4 speed power disc brakes and power steering and he paid $5,300 dollars and he financed it through Ford Credit. I was in the 10th grade of high school and he would let me drive it every once in a while and man that was a blast.
Best looking year model from back in the day, in my opinion. So aggressive looking!

There was never a Shelby Maverick, the first Grabbers had 6’s under the hood. It was just a stripe package. It eventually got a 200 hp 302, better but no match for say a 340 Dart or Duster or a Nova SS.
I’m not arguing about the concept, it would be awesome, just give it a different name, RS, GT, Piranha, Lightning, etc.
An FX4 is no feather at 3700 lbs, only 500 lbs less than the porky 🐷 GT500.
500lbs is alot and you would feel it in any vehicle(outside of 3/4 tons and up) if it was dropped. Lose a couple hundred more and the Maverick quickens its pace.

Also Shelby Mavericks do exist. They are official Shelbys with Shelby parts sold by Carrol Shelby to be installed by people he raced with. They also looks sweet and given their engines werent quite as choked as US models, they probably held their own against anything new out of the US after 72 or 73.

My very first new car was a very affordable Shelby. :D

Very under rated car! One thing Dodge should have promoted was the fact that this little car would outrun a 1965 R code Shelby Mustang on a road course! It did suffer Dodge build quality however......
I had a Daytona Z Shelby for a Demo back when those were out. I really liked that car!

Don’t forget about the fake AC Cobras he tried to pass off in his later years. The crew even aged the frames to coincide with the ā€œmissingā€ serial numbers. I think they claimed that they had found about 50 that they had just ā€œforgotten aboutā€ in some warehouse.

O’l Shelby claimed ignorance about the whole thing.

I lost a lot of respect for him after that.
The media buried that story pretty good.
THIS!

I have been a fan of Shelby Automotive for decades. Carroll Shelby was a decent race car driver turned salesman/front man. I was the Shelby Sales Director for a Ford dealership for about 3 years. They are "Shelby" in name only. We dropped them when they could not pay their warranty claims for parts that fell off the cars or parts that had to be replaced that they "forgot" to install....
There plant in Nevada has some good things in their own way. But not performance. All style and name. Money ruined Carroll. He was heavily "influenced" by family and friends to try to take over the Shelby World Registry and ADD what he wanted to it to make money. Thankfully SAAC beat him in court over that. 1970 was the last year a true Shelby was sold. Meaning they were considered their own Manufacturer. Some would say the 1968-1970 Shelby's were not true Shelbys. I own one...and I agree they are not what was originally intended. But technically, even though built by A. O. Smith, the 68-69's were still sold as Shelby Cobra. You will not find the Mustang emblem or name on these, except in small print on the driver door tag that says "Based on the Ford Mustang". 1970 Shelby's were left over 1969 models that had the VIN changed.

And which car would you rather have today, and picking on a 20 year old car……. Were they on the same rubber?
