While the IIHS reporting on the new moderate overlap and side impact crash tests are out there now for a few weeks and pretty much stand on their own, I wanted to put my own take on them together.

I have been kind of a safety geek and a pretty big fan of the people over at the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) for some time. I believe what they do far surpasses the testing and contribution to automotive safety progress that the NHTSA has done. The IIHS evolves their testing - driven by a profit motive to help insurance companies save money by guilting car companies into building safer cars with their ever tightening testing schemes. Consumers like their ratings, the car companies follow. Good for all.

My overview here talks about the Ford Maverick in the context of not only the revised side curtain airbags which helped it perform better but also a wider view on the "Acceptable" rating it received on the moderate overlap test.
