I just finished Version 2.0 of my customized fender vents. I used my original Lariat trims for the new, updated ones. Version 1.0 was kind of a "proof of concept" project. The new versions have a much larger cut-out, and I'll probably leave these in the original textured black finish as opposed to color-matching them. The originals will be posted for sale in a few days if anyone is interested, along with a set of the Air Design ones.

How did you create these? 3d print? Would you be willing to share the file if so? What is the insert?
I think you did an amazing job man! Really well done. I have not seen a better alternative, hell these make the OEM look like a 3rd party product.

These are both OEM fender vents, not printed. For V1.0, I used a grinder with a flap wheel to remove the "block-off panel" from the backside, then fitted a piece of aluminum hex mesh that I found on Amazon. Once color-matched, I glued the mesh to the backside with J-B Weld Plastic Bond.
For V2.0, I opened them up to the first "ridge" to give them a bit more "open" area. I roughed them in with a Dremel and a cutoff wheel, then finished with the grinder and flap wheel, fit a new aluminum insert, and glued with J-B Weld Plastic Bond.

I'd be really curious to know how much heat can escape (GOOD!), and if there are any aerodynamic effects from this (maybe bad).
The fact that they spend engineering and part money on closing the shutters in the front tells me there are pretty significant effects from the aero.

After a drive, you can feel a little heat coming out of them

Shutters are to limit air intake. These will vent air, so the exact opposite of what you are worried about.

They're to decrease air flow to improve aerodynamics.

Even adding places for air to escape can have effects on the aero. Those little "anti-mud-flaps" in front of the front wheels are probably .5-1mpg increase.
