If the announcement is true, and the product has good quality and does not burn on a whim, it tends to indicate that BEVs can be recharged almost as fast as filling a tank with gasoline. That makes it more competitive. OTOH, you will have to wait for the charging stations to be built and installed to take advantage of the improved charging speed.
Given the problems that BYD is having with their vehicles combusting, I will be wary. There are several sites that report China happenings that are somewhat kept out of the media in the USA. You will have to visit YT and do a bit of searching. BEVs have their place, and they will fit there. Once the Federal subsidy was stopped, as originally planned, BEVs became less attractive to the end user.
China BEVs are being exported to EU nations, and drving local BEV manufacturers out of the market. Russia had a load of 'black market' autos imported, and they had lots of problems with suspension and body corrosion. Their 'warranty' did not come with the black market import.
Buyers should be wary of attractive low prices, and investigate before purchase.
EV sales are up 45% in March compared to February.

Must be a "spring" thing.

Power source advancements?
Not much that I've seen. Some incremental improvements in solar panels, but not much else.
Even the blade batteries are variations on an existing theme, but nonetheless at least a potential improvement, although they still rely on incredibly harmful lithium as a component.

Fusion on the other hand is many decades away if ever, and IMHO more likely never.
I'd like to be wrong about that, but I don't think so. It works great in the heart of a star, but creating those condition outside of that scenario does not seem likely to me in my grandkids lifetime.

IMHO, a better alternative to the current battery centric focus would be in electric to fuel storage via hydrogen as a transfer mechanism. Hydrogen powered cars would only produce water, and wind, solar or any fuel capable of creating electricity could be used to create the fuel.
The majority of the existing infrastructure could also be reused.

Although not actually a fuel itself, it would make an excellent transfer mechanism, and with economies of scale, it could make batteries look ridiculously expensive by comparison.
Not only from an economics perspective, a hydrogen fuel based system would be incredibly clean and non-toxic compared with every other alternative.

Unfortunately, hydrogen also happens to be the most explosive element on the planet, but with the right safeguards, that capability has already been proven to work.

Oops - Half my day is gone. Time to say adios MTC...
Several points
A) Mit has a pilot fusion plant and outside Richmond va a fusion plant is being built. Pumped storage https://www.energy.gov/cmei/water/pumped-storage-hydropower
B) there are storage options besides batteries ex.
C)china is rapidly deploying alternatives where it is expected to have half its capacity in renewables
D) gas powered vehicles have 1 fuel source where there are a myriad number of ways to generate electricity even in your own backyard or roof.
We missed the opportunity to lead and are in the position of buggy whip companies

BYD now only selling hybrids and EV… and heading towards EV sales only.
IMO they would NOT be my choice if I got stuck only choosing Chinese vehicles (not good). I got my Maverick shipped on a boat to my location. There “is” a Ford dealer still here but no service department anymore (and no Mavs).

BYD of China now has EV's and EV "Flash Chargers".

Flash chargers are apparently the next evolution above Super Fast chargers.

On a 500 mile EV:

10% to 70% in 5 minutes.

10% to 97% in 9 minutes.

I don’t see that happening here in California. We can’t seem to even generate enough electricity to keep homes powered on a warm day.

I know you are joking, but as stated above it uses a new generation of battery, maybe stop thinking of it as a battery at all. Think of it as a storage device.

And it will never be for home use.
Commercial use only. Just like gas stations.
I was not joking I was speculating based on what little I know about lithium tech,
Charge rates,
Discharge rates,

China is working with the raw materials they have in country. So I assume North Korea is going to power their next gen cars with a flux capacitor.

I took this picture last month of a
Ford Escape in Utah with range extender plugged in to the trailer hitch.

I REALLY wouldn't want to get rear-ended with that.

Where do you live?
What city or town?
Because that is, in the big picture, not the case.

Facts about California:

TWO rolling blackouts in the last 25 years. Both caused by mis-management, not lack of generating capacity.

Sounds like just what made the news. Our power goes out about once a month. Shortest, a few minutes. Longest, around 11 hours. I have battery backup and sell my stored energy to them during heavy usage. Can you imagine them trying to find the capacity to charge more vehicles at a higher speed?

It's not just the charger as existing batteries in most EV's would detonate if they were charged that fast due to thermal runaway.
China QC right !
Mount that In Your garage, plug in your new battery tech.
well, they do call it "flash" . . .

flash went the garage!

Flash went the car!

Flash went the neighborhood!

If the announcement is true,
What, you don't trust the third revolutionary battery breakthrough announcement of the week?

Our power goes out about once a month.
that's all?

My old neighborhood had so many that we didn't even bother to reset the clocks on the microwave, etc. There was just now point.

A couple of weeks ago, I got a message from the power company that the latest outage in my old neighborhood (we still have it until it sells) would be soon fixed--and that it was due to vandalism . . .

(yes, it was a nice neighborhood when we bought it 35 years ago, but now . . .)

You must be in a very unique place.
Trees falling. Rural. Sparse population.
High winds and preemptive safety power shut offs are not "lack of generating capacity".

I know you are joking.

I know you know nothing is "live" when you plug it in.

Did you know nothing is live when you unplug also?
They make it physically impossible to plug or unplug a hot connection.

Oh oh, my BS meter just spiked.

California is over-producing electricity in part to too much renewable electrical production. Wasn’t it California that also curtailed incentives for homeowners putting solar on their homes due to over-production?

Winner. Winner. Chicken dinner.

A spike out of the blue, example 70 deg, 95 deg, back to 70 deg is hard for any utility to plan for. You don't ramp up and down quickly in any state. Or country for that matter.

Accidents happen. Natural disasters happen. Break downs happen. None of it is due to generating capacity.

Let's not forget that every state except Texas is on a national power grid. Almost always importing or exporting power depending on demands.
