Thanks! That’s exactly what I wanted to know. How difficult is installation? I can build IKEA stuff, but not much beyond that.
Depends. There's models that use bolt clamps though - Just line up the rails and crank the nut down. No drilling.

Seems simple enough. I could still find a way to mess it up!

I just ordered a TruXedo TruXport roll-up off AutoAnything for $284 after tax.
I think I’m going to go with this one as well. Was thinking of the lo pro version but seems the side mounts on most lo pro covers stick out a few inches into the bed. From what I can see the truxport will mount on top of the bed rails.

Using the Maverick's customizable bed I'm sure you could work out a pretty cheap bed cover with a blue tarp and some nylon rope. That's 4.78 at Harbor Freight.

5 ft. 6'' x 7 ft. 6" All Purpose Weather Resistant Tarp (harborfreight.com)
1/4" x 50 ft. Poly Rope (harborfreight.com)

Alternatively, if you're looking for an actual theft deterrent (Something hard), I think the low end is around 850 bucks.
I think keeping things from being seen is a deterrent. Maybe not enough deterrent, depending on what you're stowing, but it's better than nothing. They'd have to know something is in there, which means cutting breaking into multiple covers before finding something. 🤷‍♂️

That being said, if someone really wants to break into a tonneau, they're probably gonna find a way, hard, soft, or cast iron.

One hears a lot of stories about people who's soft covers get cut constantly, seemingly because thieves just can't resist an automotive kinder egg. I've never experienced that, but I have known people personally who had their convertible tops slashed and stuff stolen multiple times in a year (Fort Hood is a delightful place).

If someone can cut it with a knife in less than 3 seconds just to see what's going on, I don't consider it much of a deterrent.

Going with the least expensive in truck tonneau covers,at least in my experience will leave you disappointed.
And sometimes the most expensive truck tonneau cover can be the least expensive to own.

For example, if you buy the cheapest no name junk you can find for $300, but then end up replacing it after 3 years because of problems and it only has a 1 year warranty, and then when you sell the vehicle it looks like junk reducing the resale value, then it can actually be more expensive than the $1300 tonneau that still looks practically brand new 10 years later and adds value to your resale that you also subtract from the initial purchase price.

People did this type of math with the Civic Type R vs Veloster N, and found that even though the Type R was so much more expensive to buy initially, the much higher resale meant cost of ownership was actually slightly less.

That makes sense. Personally, I considered a tonneau, but I don't leave expensive equipment in my trunk that often and what I would want to put in there will fit in the cab. To each their own, I was just trying to day that there is some deterrence when with a soft tonneau.

My purposes, move drums and tubas from I've school to another (never going to leave them in there), haul audio recording equipment (will fit in cab), and other "active" things like camping and biking (I don't leave gear packed up).

Like I said to each their own! 👍👍

Personally, as far as theft goes, I'm not concerned. I live in the boonies and no one seems to cruise our Wal-Mart looking for freebies. Soft would suit my purposes (Groceries, the odd box of random high-weight/low-value junk) just fine. I just don't think soft covers would hold up well against the perpetual fall of acorns and branches that occurs ever fall, so it's probably cheaper to pay up front for aluminum/composite than to buy 4 soft covers over the life-span of the truck.

All the tonneau manufacturers have install videos on YouTube. Check some out and see if you’re comfortable. Actually pretty simple bolt on.

Extang Exceed trifold for me. Big splurge at $849, but a lot cheaper than OEM (and hopefully better) - my Mav is just a base XL hybrid with a receiver hitch so I've saved the $ for what mattered to me - long term out of the weather and safe.
And yes you open the tailgate to unlock.
I was thinking of getting a Bakflip MX4 but this seems like a good option, too. Thanks for the heads up.

Also I must admit that I like my truck bed cover to match the body color of my truck. So an Area 51, hard top, lockable, adjustable,it will be. The LSII A.R.E. tonneau cover on my F150 still works and looks good after nearly 20 years, and it matches the color of the truck.

I ordered mine just a few days (like the 14th) after you posted this and just got it yesterday (11/18)

Real easy to install, you got to leave it back 3/4" from the window, but it fit perfectly! Took me all of 15 mins to do!

Also noticed that the price has gone up to $309.99 before tax and shipping.

I've had three F150's all of which I bought a cheap cover off Amazon for. I don't like trifolds or hard tops as they take up bed space when folded. The cheap covers I bought were made by Tyger Auto and were only $208 for an 8' bed. All three have held up perfectly to heavy snow, rain and heat, I park outside. I'll buy one of those in a second when it's released for the Mav.

I'll never get over the amount of people that lecture people about a cheap product not being good quality or lasting long. We get it, you don't think people know that cheap almost never equals good? The man asked for a cheap cover to keep the elements off of some things, not for an impenetrable barrier that would stop a man with a blowtorch, if that's what he wanted, that's what he would have asked for.

I’ve never owned a truck. Do all tonneau require you to open the tailgate to release it? Im worried about keeping the items safe from theft. I have an XLT scheduled with the electronic tailgate lock.
Yes every tonneau cover I have seen requires you to open the tailgate to be able to unlock it
