I will be meeting with the owner of Radica who builds the Moonlander camper on Saturday. Hopefully we can come up with a plan to make this work. I actually have an idea to increase the interior space while parked that I will pitch to him too. Looks like I will be putting 2500 miles on my little truck this week! Waiting to swap wheels until after this trip.

We were heading out on a 7 day road trip to Colorado to escape the Texas heat and got delayed one day. I built this setup in that day! It secured our gear in the bed while traveling, hotel nights and trail heads. We pulled into any campsite, pulled our camp boxes out, slid them under the truck, Lifted the top, bolted the 2x2 legs in to hold it up, threw in our double blow up, pillows, tossed over the mosquito netting and boom. I also used a tent fly in case any rain was forecast. We were lucky there.
Of course, I have a list of improvements to add
(waterproofing is a challenge with the unibody bed) but for a whim and a day, it worked out great! Paid for itself the first night camping instead of hotel $$$.

**We have a popup (which our Mav w/4k tow hauls fine) and have tent camped for many years... this is an addition for road trips!

How is it mounted in the bed? I just went with the truck bed tent, but would like a better option. Truck bed takes 15-20 mins to set up, half to take down.

I built a 2x4 frame at the hinges and used L brackets and unistrut spring bolts to bolt it down. I used the same bolts to secure the 2x2s in place that prop the top open. It makes it easy to remove it as well. I plan on using rubber material under the hinges to waterproof that gap. Im thinking to trim the netting to fit under the edges of the top and staple up a string every so often to roll the netting and tie it up.
We had a bed tent for our Nissan Frontier. I like this much better.

I didn't take too many pics. I was in a hurry to get it ready.

Tent on the ground is sooooo much cheaper and more practical. Add a tarp if its muddy or something. $40 table from walmart and there's your kitchen. 20 min setup time.
Its not like we're in Australia or Africa and are worried about crazy animals. I can't help but attribute blame the whole RTT (roof top tent) and over landing craze to instagram:
Photo look cool - must imitate.

and a bed - tent!?! Empty all your gear out of the bed, then setup your tent. Seems like the worst option of all!

Experienced car-camper and backpacker, here. And "car camping" means your vehicle carries your gear, not that you sleep in your car! *middle-aged man yells at RTTs - Simpson meme here*

sorry, rant over
carry on

I may put my icamper mini roof top tent . It doesn’t hang over the tail gate and you get bed storage. I have the in bed tent but you need to pull gear out to assemble. The iCamper mini sets. Up in under 60 seconds.

I saw this custom camper at the Overland Expo in Flagstaff. I think they’re on Instagram @wanderingtheweekend. It was really a nice build. He added airbags to help rear sag. I thought the tent top was genius.

Airbags? The tent is about 150 pounds. Camping gear and fridge should be about 200 pounds. I don’t see how there would be sag unless there are four line backers for 1,200 pounds .

When Flated did not include a tailgate extension for sleeping, I bought a Napier tent for the Maverick and build a sleeping platform on top of the wheel wells. Then to use the space under the platform, add slides to hold plastic pins for storage. With extension, platform is 6.5' and is fully enclosed by the tent.

Weight can be a little different in off road situations. The air bags arent for increasing load capacity they are for managing it.

I gotta say. That is a nice bed setup. Just the bins and levels is great itself and... A nice quick bed.
