Brake pad replacement process

For some reason, the manual has the nomenclature above the images instead of below them, so refer to the images after the numbered steps which may end up on the next page (and often do).

First off, you have to enter brake service mode:

Now onto the front pads. (you can skip deactivating the service mode if doing the front and rears - which you should be doing at the same time anyways)

Now, onto the rears (again, skip the deactivation of brake maintenance mode from the previous page):

Now deactivate brake service mode. Be careful to not click your heels three times or you may end up in Kansas.

And that's it, you are done! Pat yourself on the back and count how much money you added to the swear jar - you are probably broke now.

Thanks! So rear brake pads are not reusable (eg if just want to clean contact points) as they have adhesives?

When i do brake services i lubricated sliders and caliper contact points with Brake Dielectric grease . heres a picture of the product we use in ford service.

But first check to make sure yours will go into service mode. Also, the caliper hangers are handy too

Hold on to your stock springs as well. I found they fit better than the aftermarket ones that came with my Powerstop pads.

No. Mine will not go into service mode for the rear.

I'm not certain, the kit is universal. Mine would not go into service mode so I could not do the rear. Any kit you buy will have multiple sizes.

Hi, do you happen to have the torque specs for the caliper mounting bracket? I'm going to be replacing my brakes this weekend and the specs on the normal escape seem a bit high at 129 ftlbs in the front and 71 ftlbs in the rear.

The caliper guide pin bolts are 21 lb.ft and the caliper anchor plate (which you don't need to remove for the pads) is 81 lb.ft. That will allow you to remove the rotor.

I am planning to replace the rotors while i'm doing the pads. I'm trying to get back into learning my personal vehicle maintenance and keeping up with what issues seem to pop up on this forum.

I hope to become more mechanically competent so i can do some upgrades that are posted here like the oil catch can, lift, beefier cv axle if it comes out. I know a decent few people are complaining about the lack of quality control and are working to improve the reliability themselves.

Brakes are pretty easy just make sure yours goes into service mode first. I can't comment on what others are doing if it doesn't, but I ended up taking mine in rather than risk messing with the e-brake stuff. That's all still new to me. I'm not comfortable messing with it at all. But others have found work arounds and some even mentioned the service mode not really being necessary if you are only doing the pads.

I tried putting into service mode and heard it wind back, then it went out of service mode. No flashing lights on the dash or anything. The EPB still works, but i plan on calling the dealer to ask if it's okay to just wind it back if it's disengaged and disconnected from the connector.

Pretty sure that's what everyone else is doing too, along with disconnecting the battery as well and removing any charge the vehicle might still hold.
