Carroll Shelby liked whatever any manufacturer would pay him to like.

The Series 1 was a fiasco. There's an excellent book about it.

No need to read it. To me it was the wrong engine, and not a great body like the original.

NO need . 1000x times I would prefer a MANUAL TRANSMISSION .
I believe 2 trucks sold in the US still offer a manual. Super rare these days on a lot though.

No need to read it. To me it was the wrong engine, and not a great body like the original.
But it's a fascinating book. That project was a cluster from beginning to end.

yeah, don't mess with Dr. Newton. He was serious about that "object at rest" bit . . .

Under the intake manifold! Mounted in the V between the cylinders. Stupidest design ever.
I don't like that aspect either, but they were operating under the constraints of the late 80s and early 90s. They managed to cram eight cylinders under the hood of a deville, and put out power unseen in decades--while producing twice the mileage of the handful of engines that matched it's peak power.

More limitations:
* the plugs ( & coils) r on the rear bank were a nightmare to change on the deville, as it was framed in. Not so bad on the Eldorado with it's longer hood.
* they had to put the battery in the passenger compartment on the deville. Again, the constraints of space & emissions (which caused the space constraint).

I've dealt with both the starter and the plugs. But compared to anything else available for mass production in 1993, it was an amazing feat of engineering. The next closest was probably the new ford 4.6 modular (1991)--with only two thirds the horsepower (180 compared to 295). The ford engine code also be produced at quantity and price to put in a lot of fords, while the Northstar was very limited in production for a couple of years, and pricer.

Engineering is all about tradeoffs. 295 net HP in 1993 took a lot of them, some of which we hate!

the old timers loved the manuals so you could lug the engine and listen to it detonate( gas engine,the diesels made their own peculiar racket,its funny watching a young woman trying to take off on a hill with a manual.

I still have a 4 speed Muscle car, because it was the best combo then. My late Model Mustang is a 10 Speed auto. They were over half a second quicker in the 1/4 mile, and enough for it to run 11's bone stock.
