AWD non FX-4 vs FX-4 - Differences?

Reading the manual, it looks like there are differences in how the all wheel drive works between the offroad and non-offroad packages. Can anyone elaborate more on this and what the specific differences are (for example - Are the differences mechanical or in the software?) I intend on getting AWD primarily for snowy road conditions and for some light offroading. Was not intending on getting the FX4 package but now thinking I might want/need to.

It'll get you skid plates, tow hooks, suspension changes, bigger radiator and fan, black rims, some middling tires, some extra driving modes, and since you have an XLT a bigger screen in your dash.

I'm going to paint mine! Going for some neon/highlighter accents on my cactus gray. Haven't decided between highlighter yellow or blue yet, but the FX4 badges and maybe a vertical row offset in the front grill.
