I'm in my brother's truck, and he's got a pretty big screen. With it he has gmaps next to Spotify. There's no reason our little 8" screen couldn't do the same thing. Am I doing something wrong, or is that option only available on a screen that Google decides is big enough? Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk®

Google announced this afternoon wide-scale roll out of their "coolwalk" update to Android Auto that they have been working on for months, which includes new multi-app UI. It should work on the Maverick screen once you have the necessary updates.

OH woo! My brother said his always had the side by side. So weird. I guess I'll wait patiently...we maverick owners are good at that.

Because your brother's truck has a wider screen. The "old" layout has the optional extra panel to the right if the screen is wide enough. Technically it's a bit more complicated than that but in practice, that's the gist of it.

Notice that the screen you show above, the ratio of width to height is greater than on the typical 16:9 widescreen format like on a Maverick.

The new layout isn't replicating the same thing. It's a new Home Screen that offers the split screen view shown - maps, music, and relevant phone/message cards. When you open up Maps full screen, for instance, it's still just maps - no extra panel to the side.
