It's been awhile and I figured we all need another Air filter thread - LoL -

Anyways I am @ 17k and the OEM filter is pretty dusty. Always been a KN fan but seems most folks are just not into that anymore.

What filter are the cool kids using these days ?

Cheers -

K&N, still have the oem one on my Tremor Maverick, but when its time is K&N time. Same for the Cabin air filter

I do like that channel. But we have posted two test that are actually certified.
In both the certified test, they pass.
Not saying more info is not better. Just making sure everyone knows as much info as possible before they make a choice.

Exactly, turns out k&n makes power by not actually filtering....
I wouldnโ€™t say that. If it passed the test for standards does it matter? It passes with more efficiency than sae standards. So even if they do less than others is it ever gonna matter?

Point being is if it filters over the 96percent at the proper micro size. Then maybe all the worry is for nothing. Again if you are not running a tune then again I think the point is moot.
I think that some times we tend to over think and over worry about it.

Perhaps,. How much difference would it make without a tune? Maybe a placebo effect

No. While bigger pores is a given, it's not going to matter.

Are you driving a Ford Maverick or a James Webb Space Telescope?

Ya probably not gonna make a difference. But I know a few people that track mpg very close and one now has a maverick. I believe he may have just put in a KN. Curious if he sees anything on that end. I would doubt it.

Not that I am trying to stir the pot here or nothing, but I didnt search here on the site in case this was posted elsewhere, but speaking of air filters, came across this video and figured I would post it. The last couple days I had the K&N filter in the cart waiting for my next paycheck to buy it, but after this post and then coming across the video..I am going to take a moment to maybe rethink the K&N. NOTE: I am not saying that the K&N is bad or anything, just going to look at other options before I pull the trigger.

My 09Escape that I had for 225k miles (11yrs) I had a K&N air filter for its life. I never had any issues with the engine or anything that would had been impacted by a crappy air filter. At that time I knew/heard K&N was a good filter and washable, so I got it. I love the reusable aspect and after apx 50k miles and 3 or so air filter changes with regular air filters... I could have paid for the K&N was a selling point for me. Every 20k or so miles after that was saving me money.

With the video, the unofficial flour test he does is making me rethink that decision a little bit. He was measuring the particle sizes the filters are rated for (not the fact that its flour vs normal air components)....but the large night/day difference between the filters for the same test parameters and just the difference in filter design/application is what I am thinking about. Do I need the increased airflow for fast acceleration and similar reasons...no. Do I need to block out all particles and make the engine work harder to suck in the air it needs...not so much. So thats where I am at, I still like the reusable aspect of the K&N but now going to see if there are other brands that may fit what I would like better. If there are none I most likely will stay with the K&N just for the resuable aspect.

Thanks for reading my slight rant and here is the video...

Look, if they were as bad as some people say it would be apparent by now and they would be out of business. They are NOT a new company.

The "tests" you see online do NOT reproduce real-world conditions.

And look at it this way: what else puts "flour" sized particles in your engine?

Burning gasoline. Are you going to let that fun fact keep you up at night?

Also the term "best" is relative.

Best at what?

What is a horse best at?
Or what is a Swiss army knife best at?

K&N may be best at saving you money.
Someone else's filter may be best at filtering flour. I don't drive in a flour factory, maybe you do?

No I agree with you. I had a K&N for 200k miles with 0 issues. with his rough testing where the different filters all were in the "same" experiment, I guess I was expecting a little more flow through the performance ones because if they "let more air flow" then at the same time "more air and particles would get through too".... but that big of a difference was a bit of a shock to me.

Thats why I was going to look into seeing if there is a filter that maybe checks more boxes for me more than the K&N currently does.... and if not (like I said before), I would most likely get the K&N again because I had no issues with it before. Just still kinda had the "K&N is a good brand name, I had it before, ill get it again"....and then seen this post and video, so I wanted to take a moment to actually surf around at other filters before I pulled the trigger is all.

Check out air raid. They have a dry filter that basically cross layers the Kn media. They get very high praise for both added hp when trying for that and filtration. Iโ€™ve cleaned them before on a construction site truck. Was shocked how much dirt you could wash out of one.
