Hi all,

I bought the Lariat EB 2.0, AWD, and 4k tow package. I know the Lariat comes with 18in wheels, but I saw a post that suggested that the smaller 17in wheels would give the best ride quality. Can anyone give me some guidance on how I should modify my Maverick for the best possible ride? Should I add the FX4 package, for example?

Thanks for any advice,

The continental tires that come on the non fx4 xl & xlt are the same ones I had on my ‘17 focus. I am very confident they will give a smooth/soft highway ride and good fuel economy.

I have no Input on how the fx4’s different shocks will effect the ride quality, but going down the the 17” continental tires should be an improvement.

The reviews on Tire Rack are not so kind to the Continental's. Lots of mediocre reviews. Hydroplaning was mentitoned several times, both positively and in a negative tone. In Tire Rack tests it finished 3rd out of 4.

The link goes to Tire Rack's page of the 3 OEM tires for the Maverick. Click on the OEM (3) in top left corner.

When the wife was still with us, she had a 2008 Mercury Mariner (remember Mercury's) AWD V-6. It had Continental Eco-biased tires. When we could no longer take the noise and the harsh ride the tires gave, we realized that the vehicle was great and the tires sucked. Replaced with Firestone Destination LE and it truly was like getting a new vehicle.

Thanks Dan for the insight. I assume the Mariner had 17 inch wheels? And you replaced the stock Continentals with Firestones?

I’ll concur. I swapped the continentals for Goodyear Assurance Weatheready. My lowly focus S could suddenly corner 10mph faster than before with no hint of tire squeal. The continental would push wide in the wet at a pretty low limit. The Goodyear’s were solid. The added grip was very welcoming in the wet. I’ll run the stock continental tires up but I won’t be buying a second set.

***edit***looking at the ratings on tire rack, I’m really liking the vredestein quatrac pro!

No it had 16in. Yes we replaced the Contis with US made Firestones at 30,000 miles..

I have a question for somebody about the tires. My Maverick AWD XLT comes with A/S tires. With what people are saying about the FX4 package A/T tires. Could I assume my tires will be better because they're all season. I've been tossing back and forth putting the FX4 package on.

Neither the Continental A/S or the Pirelli A/T get that great of reviews in wet or snow. I wouldn't select the fx4 if your only motive is the tire.

I had good luck with Michelin Primacy in the past. they are the tires on the 18‘s on the Lariat. Based on the above, I am glad to be getting them.

I wish we could choose Firestone Destinations. I put them on my 2001 4.0L 4x4 and I love them the truck hooks up as good as my mustang did.
