Isn't there an old trick of looking inside the radiator cap to see if the head gasket has a problem? If the gasket is bad, there will be a milky film on the dipstick and/or on the inside of the oil cap or radiator cap.
There are also inexpensive kits to test your antifreeze for engine oil . . .
