You are right, planetary gear sets are fascinating, you can get 7 different gears with a single gear set in a conventual transmission by applying clutch/brakes: to each of the 3 elements but the eCVT doesn't work like that:The secret is not in understanding the two motor generators and an internal combustion engine, the secret is in understanding planetary gear sets. After watched numerous YouTube videos on planetary gear sets, I concluded, they are magic.
Took me a while, the sun gear is coupled to MG1, the planet carrier is coupled to the ICE and the anulus is coupled to the wheels via MG2. So when the vehicle is stationary the anulus is fixed, when the ICE is off the planet carrier is stationary but the planet gears can still spin.
Not sure if this explains it or just confuses it.
