I just got a 2024 XLT AWD and started to notice ( I don’t believe it was like this during test drive) while slowing down, exactly at 13mph i feel and hear a thump from the back. This problem goes away with traction control turned off and happens while slowing at any speed. I’m not braking hard or slowing quickly. I’ve been arguing back and forth with a unhelpful dealership that scratched my new car and they have to fix when I take it back for a fix but they aren’t willing to say it’s a problem unless they compare it to another identical car which they do not have on their lot. I’m extremely frustrated because I love everything else and I don’t want to turn off traction control to just not listen/feel this problem.

Take it to another Ford dealership or independent auto repair shop for diagnosis.

Dealers rarely have them on the lot to make a comparison like that. Do you know another Maverick owner that could come with you to an appointment? Is there a forum member that could help you? What dealer?

Mine does the same thing, I posted about this a few months ago. Happens at same speed, although I haven’t tried turning traction control off to see if it does or helps anything. Let me know what you find out, I swapped to various drive modes and it still happens. Sometimes it’s pretty noticeable and sometimes it isn’t.

Turning traction control off in mine did make the thud go away, I’m no AWD expert by any means but traction control on these trucks seems a little redundant right?

It could be the torque converter unlocking. It can lock in 4th gear, and you can get into 4th at very low speeds, like 25-30 mph. It will bog a bit until it unlocks and downshifts, but I haven't heard any audible clunking from mine.

If your truck has sport mode, try that.

I know what you’re talking about there, that does happen but Is not the problem I’m experiencing. It almost feels like someone is bumping me from behind.

I don’t know anybody else with one. I’m going to the university ford north in Durham NC. They’re not very helpful and going to try making the extra hike to the Henderson NC location I bought it from and see if they’re more helpful. The Durham location is on the hook for repairing and repainting the damage they did because I had the sense to take all angle pictures of my truck in their parking lot when I dropped it off so they had to double back when I showed them they are in fact responsible. Wanted a fix and just got more of a headache.

I have the same problem with my 2024 Maverick, did not notice it right away. When braking at around 15 to 10 MPH I hear the thud sound. It sounds like a noise from front on car. (4400 Miles)
Dealer said could not duplicate problem???, but it does happen a lot.

Not at all. TCS makes AWD even better. When a wheel slips, TCS applies the brake on that wheel to help it regain traction. While the brake is applied, the power normally going to that wheel is applied to the other three instead, due to the way differentials work.

Exactly how big of a difference it makes depends on driving conditions. On dry pavement with plenty of grip it could be seen as redundant. In mud, snow, ice, etc it can make a big difference

Did you ever get to the bottom of the 13 mph thump or thunk noise? Lots of us with AWD Mavericks are having the same noise but no resolution as of yet. Here are a couple of threads I started on the issue in case your interested:

yeah it's here. it's either the torque converter unlocking or you have an rdu going out.

you can tune the transmission so that it doesn't use such ridiculously low rpm and doesn't lock in 4th gear. that's here also.
