I've been looking at the KIA Niro. It is the closest thing that I can find to the hybrid for the money. It has a little better gas milage but cost a few thousand more (2-4). I feel like those things offset.

This is not that bad of an idea. I am thinking I will just buy something during an end-of-the-year sale (likely a Kia Niro). If i am 'lucky' and my Maverick actually gets built, I am sure I can sell it for more than I paid for it.
I agree. I found this video to be helpful. You make clear trade offs when deciding (I think it is pretty clearly all by design on Ford's end). I think the trade off is hauling vs towing.
