I don't really notice this. It will use engine braking as much as it can before downshifting. If I am going downhill and have it set at 75, it'll usually start attempting to slow down once it hits 77.
Keep in mind that batteries will show a lower voltage when the weather gets cold. So, you might see this message more often in the winter than the summer. Also, if you don't drive it for an extended period, it'll pop up even if the battery is fine.
I pretty much look exclusively at the distance to empty. I'll glance at the gauge, but then immediately look at how many miles I have left. I usually fill up once it gets below 100 miles to go and generally don't let it get below 50. After two years and 13,000 miles, my DTE is pretty stable...

Oh, I'm not doubting the wasted space. Common problem amongst apps even from the likes of Microsoft. Seems they offshored their UX teams to people who have no idea how to do it.
