Maverick is at the dealership and I might need a rental. Can I buy the ESP extended warranty online now and be covered for a rental?

Hello friends. My 23 Maverick hybrid is at the dealer being checked for some kind of overheating/electrical problem.

Starting Thursday I have to drive out of town and back a number of times and will need a vehicle.

The Maverick has 21775 miles and is under the bumper to bumper warranty. My understanding is that warranty does not offer any rental car reimbursement; only the extended warranty covers rentals.

I was already thinking about buying Ford's ESP extended warranty anyway. If I buy the warranty online from Granger Ford, will I be covered for vehicle rental reimbursement even though the dealer has already started looking at the vehicle? (This is assuming that whatever repair is needed is covered by the bumper to bumper warranty.)

Also I'm curious if you've had to get a rent, how was the experience?

There may still be rental funding available to the dealer from Ford when your vehicle is under 3/36 or 5/60 warranty. Dealers have a budget and discretion for rental periods under 10 days. If it is longer than that, they Ford's approval is necessary (and funds come from Ford, not dealer's budget).

In any case, there had to be an available vehicle for you to take. Same w/ ESP. Dealer has to have a loaner/rental for you. If you end up renting from a 3rd party, the reimbursement amount will likely be less than what Ford will reimburse.

The only way to get a correct answer is to contact Grainger.
Someone else told me that there is usually an activation period on extended warranties. However I called Ford and they said the dealership would usually honor the extended warranty reimbursement if I bought it now. So I'm gonna check with the dealership. Like many things dealer-related it seems to depend on the dealer itself and whether they will work with you.

Thanks for the info. I'll definitely check with the dealer before renting from a third party.

Welp I just got off the phone with the dealer and they say they don't have any rental contracts with any companies. It's a really small town dealership and unfortunately I seem to be out of luck in that regard. She said my best option would be to call Ford directly and see if they would cover me for renting a Ford vehicle via a third party. Which I don't think I've seen any Fords when I've been looking for rentals on Kayak.

This actually causes me some doubts about buying the extended warranty at all if I can't get rentals nearby. The reason I took the Mav to the small dealership is because my closer, larger dealer couldn't even look at the Maverick until mid-November.

Yes, that is the issue. I work at a small rural dealership too. There are no rental companies in our area. So for loaners/rentals, we only have the dealership-owned vehicles available. There is only a very limited number of loaners available. That makes it very tough with hard-to-diagnose concerns....and all of the back ordered parts!

All the service people I've talked to have been really nice. Fortunately the issue replicated itself when they did a test drive and it overheated on the highway. This morning they did a pressure test and it started spraying coolant at the radiator. So its all covered by the bumper-to-bumper warranty and now we're playing the fun "how long to get parts" game as you mention!

The one upside is that I have a cousin who works at a car rental company and can get me a friends and family rate on a rental. I suppose its also not entirely bad that I don't have to put a ton of miles on the Maverick while travelling.

Well, I'm glad they have been able to identify the issue. I hope that there are no parts delays for you!
