Years ago I developed a belief: if you have to justify something (to yourself or others), you probably shouldn't do it. Anytime I say that to someone, the knee jerk response is something like, "I don't think that's true" or "Really? why?", or "That's nonsense." But if you think about it, most times it's true.

I've wrestled with "Should I trade my MY22 school bus yellow/orange XLT Hybrid w/ 35k miles on it for a MY25 XLT Hybrid w/ the luxury package. The '25 will cost about $34k out the door, and Carvana said they'd give me $25,400 for my '22. A $7,600 difference. Now for the justification. :)

Since I now buy half as much gas with a hybrid, I've taken $45 every other week for 2 years and sent it to my investment account. It's now worth about $6,000. That money was going to be for when I needed repairs after the warranty, but I can use it for the new truck and reset the bumper to bumper warranty. That means I'll finance an additional $1,600 for 3 years (an extra $50/month). But that might be less with interest rates coming down next month.

Plus, I get a larger screen (which I've been wanting for 2 years), Synch4, a heated steering wheel, and a brand new truck with a 3 year warranty. Lastly, the old adage is "Don't buy the 1st year of a new model, because the reliability (both short & long term) are unpredictable. My Maverick has been great through 35k miles, but what about once it's out of warranty? No telling.

I put all this in writing to see if it all made sense on paper...of course it makes sense in my head. :ROFLMAO: It seems wise (or at least acceptable) financially. It seems good emotionally since I've had a problem with the color (felt like I got duped with the Cyber "Orange") and the screen size since day one. AND the heated steering wheel is the most decadent, senseless amenity that I love (my wife has one).

I almost deleted this, because I've made my decision and placed the order. Putting it in writing solidified it makes sense to me logically. But I'm curious what everyone else thinks about either my belief about justifying something or my thoughts on "trading" a MY22 for a MY25. Maybe your thoughts will help someone else struggling with this dilemma.

First of ALL! It's Your Ride!
And the decision was an easy one, since as you stated.
Your "Resetting" the Clock on possible future maintenance.
And you have more amenities..

(IMO, I am not a fan of the "School Bus" color... :ROFLMAO:)

As the previous poster asked? What color Are YOU GET'IN? :ROFLMAO:

OK, here I go with my thoughts. It's the perfect time to trade up. I, like you, bought an early Maverick when they first came out. I got a loaded HPR Lariat at X-plan pricing @ 32K out the door. Never had a problem with the truck, and only have 8600 miles on it, so I'm keeping mine. You can get top dollar for yours with 35K, and for $7600, start over with a new, better optioned truck 3 years newer! It's a win, win, for you. Go for it.

At least your old Maverick is worth something, and just consider it like a lease. Tons of people do 3-year leases, and trading in a car after 3-years is really just a lease with extra steps.

In my case the delta between the Nissan I have and the Maverick I want is about $20K, so I'm definitely still on the fence on whether or not I can swing it and will want to sit in one in person.

The nice thing is trucks tend to hold value and the Maverick is very popular! Great time to trade up. I'm close to doing the same. I want AWD hybrid and tow package. Need to figure out on color and if I will go XLT or Lariat this time!

I think the only question is which color are you choosing for the ‘25?
As the previous poster asked? What color Are YOU GET'IN? :ROFLMAO:
I'm getting Oxford White.

I got Cyber Orange, because I went to Clemson and love orange. Aside from orange, I'm not really a "flashy" color kind of guy, and Ruby Red was really the only other color I liked a lot. I love how bright white "pops" on a vehicle...especially when I put my tiger paws and decals on it. :)

I'm going through a similar mental exercise now. My 2022 ECO AWD LUX 360 HPR was $30,500 OTD. I priced the same as a 2025 and it's $35,200 OTD. My calculations...

$35,500 purchase price - minimal taxes because of a closely valued trade.

  • My personal incentives for buying...
  • -1,000 new tires I won't have to buy. (mine are almost toast) checked with Tire Rack
  • -1,000 value of the new tech to me personally
  • -1,000 value of restarting the 3 year warranty to me personally (based on past Ranger ownership experience - upkeep costs real money once the warranty is gone)
  • -2,000 my personal allowance for 27,000 miles (two years) of depreciation
  • - 500 military discount if still offered
  • - ?? future ford incentives ?? I'm ready to wait for them to appear this winter.

So $5,000 or so is the difference I'm willing to pay for the trade. Less is better. So I'll simply call my dealer, Carvana offer in hand, and (without sharing the info above) see if he can get me in a 2025 Maverick for at or less than $5,000. Any more than that - not worth my trouble. I'll wait for better sales conditions, which I think are coming.

Not saying my approach is right for everyone. It's just right for me. I'm a spreadsheet kind of guy.

BTW, I laugh when the media guys (or MTC members) talk about list prices - while leaving out the $2,000 in delivery and fees Ford charges. What a laugher.

Edit: After checking my Carvana offer, I don't think my numbers add up. Carvana is only offering $25,400 for my pretty mint, pretty loaded Maverick. $10,000 to upgrade to a 2025? No thanks. I'll double check that trade with my dealer and a few other sites, but Maverick resale values seem to be plummeting in my area.

Well there isn’t a better color available ;)
I was going to get HPR, because I heard it was more orange than red, but they discontinued it.

I don't hate Cyber Orange, and it REALLY stands out in a parking lot...or anywhere really. :) But it isn't available anymore, and I like bright white a little more on a truck.

If it makes you happy then you made the right decision. It's your money and you only live once.

Cyber Orange is a great color, my '21 Bronco was Cyber Orange, I was sad when they discontinued it. My next choice was HPR and of course that got discontinued in '25. That Space White is kind of growing on me.

Tires were another issue. Mine also needs new tires. I'm not sure I can sell or trade it with the current tires or if they'll even make it until my '25 is built/delivered, so it may be a non-issue, except I'll buy inexpensive ones if I'm selling it, so I'll probably save $300-$500 on tires, not the full $1k.

Not sure where you are in life, but another factor is: I'm in my late 50s and have driven old, used, high mileage vehicles for 30 years, but now I can afford a nicer vehicle. The reason I didn't mention that earlier is: just because I can afford something doesn't mean I SHOULD afford it. But it's one more reason that helped me be ok with getting a new one.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Yup, I think your right!
The "Mark-Up's" won't be an issue.. Especially for the "year-old" 2024's.. :ROFLMAO:
Hard to understand how so many, leave out the "additional" costs $$ in a vehicle purchase...;)

I have 2 coworkers that have white vehicles. One is Oxford White, the other is Space White (or something similar). They always park next to each other, and the Space White one always looks dirty to me. Just sayin'... :ROFLMAO:

I'm not trying to dissuade you or bad mouth space white, it's just what I've noticed when SW is next to another white vehicle. But if you like it, you like it. Variety is the spice of life after all, and not everyone loves bright white like I do. :)
