I know a lot of us complain about certain short comings with the maverick, the noisy interior, all the recalls, etc. I've done it myself quite a bit. But there are vehicles you drive, that make you say "The maverick is actually a damm great vehicle for what it is". Vehicles that are so bad, they make you gain a renewed appreciation for your maverick.

The Toyota 4-runner is one such vehicle. Not the version that just came out, but the dinosaur, the generation that was on sale from like 2009-2023. We just rented one, and it was a truly abysmal vehicle. The three row had zero cargo space, maybe six inches on rear cargo space behind the third row, and no, that's not an exaggeration.

The seats felt like molded plastic on the most uncomfortable amusement park ride you've ever been on. The truck was extremely harsh over any and all bumps it came across. It accelerated like a slug, but drank gas like no other, it was hard to see out of. Not to mention everytime you got in, you how to crouch at a 45 degree angle to avoid hitting your head on the roof, while also climbing up into this monster truck abomination.

It rattled and buzzed like no tomorrow, and had multiple things broken on it despite being basically brand new. The only benefit about it was because it was a rental, there were zero repercussions with abusing the shit out of it.

Haha, my wife reads some forums (non Maverick related for some reason 🤷‍♀️) and they have an acronym they use, BEC. It stands for “bitch eating crackers,” as in, “look at that bitch eating crackers like she owns the place,”
It sounds like the Toyota 4-Runner is your BEC of the car world.
Edit…
My BEC is my in-laws Kia sorento. I almost bought one a decade or so ago, and I am so glad I didn’t.

Too right, there are a lot of vehicles that I can look back on (or aside on) and say "yup, sure glad I didn't keep that" or "I'm glad I wasn't desperate enough to buy one of those".

The Maverick's issues (so far) are mostly nits and I've been fortunate enough to not run into any of the fairly limited number of "big" problems.

It's easy to get caught up in the MTC echo chamber on quality issues. Some have had real issues, most little to nothing and a few just like to bitch whether they had/have/might have a problem or not.
I consider myself lucky I didn't go with the latest new model of Explorer, Tundra, Cyber to name a few. The launch teams on those three would love to have had the success that the Maverick team has earned out of the box.

I can’t really think of a car that I have had that I have hated. I have a few I wish I never got rid of.
First car, 81 Toyota Celina, great but AC didn’t work. Second car, 61 ford falcon, my dad made it into a Franken car and put the drive train from the Toyota Celina in it after I totaled the Celica. That thing was a blast to drive. Then 2 Mitsubishi mighty max trucks, both 88s, one got stolen at college so I bought the second. Then a 98 s-10. I got rid of it when the AC kept having problems. 2005 Pontiac vibe, 330,000 trouble free miles before the transmission died. 2011 Chevy Cruze, had 225,000 miles on it when I got rid of it and maybe put $1000 in repairs over its lifetime. 2006 Chevy trailblazer with a 5.3 v-8. Probably the only car I regret getting rid of. 2009 Toyota sienna, that thing was a pain in the ass. Probably my least favorite car. 2009 Chevy Silverado, liked it, but it ate through tires (expensive ones) and only got 16mpg, 11mpg towing my travel trailer. 2022 Toyota Prius, love the car, lifetime average 62 mpg at the computer, and finally my 24 Maverick which so far, over 1300 mile trip we are on now is towing my trailer at 16mpg. None of those cars were specifically terrible cars, but I have always taken good care of my cars and they seem to not have all of the problems that other people would have with the same make/models.

Hmmm... My reflection? I've ridden in a 57 Chevy that had enough body roll that it cold pitch you out the side window, a Corvair that had the floor boards rusted out. and more. The Maverick is a pretty good vehicle.

Pretty much 😂. 4 runner and Tacoma owners act like they're hot shit, when in reality, they're just shit. They really don't excell in any area, not even in the reliability department. They're reliable, about the same reliability rating as a maverick 85/100 for the maverick and 87/100 for the 4 runner. But unlike a maverick, they aren't really good anywhere else.

Oh no doubt it's a problem. But it's problem that works against any and everything pretty equally in my case. I even apply that line of thinking to myself. I would say rather than fundamental attribution error, I'm closer to someone who catastrophizes worse than anyone you've ever met. I'll hear a belt squeak in my car and worry that this is where it starts, my car's deteriorating condition.

Frankly, I've tried to overcome it many times, I just don't know how. Not fun to live that way, but it is what it is. That's one of the reasons why I'm reluctant to get rid of my maverick. One, our '22 has been pretty flawless, so I don't want to sell it because other people are having issues. But secondly, knowing my brain, I'll seek out new forums for whatever car I replaced the maverick with, and start the cycle of worrying all over again about the things that might happen.

Basically in the same boat. We call it the used car curse in my family. Where most of the cars we buy new we end up loving, and they last a long time. But almost every used car we've had, including ones which were basically brand new, have had a ton of issues. We don't own this 4 runner, it was a rental in case I didn't mention that. But I agree with you, long term reliability is almost entirely dependent on how a car is treated.

Wow! You drive a LOT. I had my '87 Mustang GT for 36 years...
Yes, I used to. Now my wife does. I used to commute an hour and 45 minutes each way to work. I put about 275,000 on my vibe from 2009 to 2012 and then 130,000 on my Cruze from 2012 to 2015. Then we moved closer to my work and now my wife puts the miles on taking my boys to school. We are rural and the school is 17 or 18 miles from home. In my life, I have easily driven more than a million miles. Put about 10,000 miles on my Celica for the year I had it. I was 16 and wrecked it. The falcon I put 25,000 on it before I got my 1st Mitsubishi, put 25,000 on it. My second Mitsubishi I put 75,000 on. My first motorcycle I put 68,000 on, second put 38,000 on. I worked as a parts guy at a repair shop and drove most of my day. I put about 150,000 on the parts trucks. (We had 3 during the time I was there. They were driven about 100,000 a year, although not just by me) not to mention the miles put on customer vehicles for pickup and delivery and test driving. Now for perspective, I am 43.

Haha. Friend had a 60 Falcon back around 1972 with an Econoline straight bar front suspension and a small block Chevy motor tied to a Ford rear end. We also used to go clubbing in his ten year old '62 Comet. it was all chalked out dia- brown colored. He almost lost it one night. One of the locals ran a wrecking service and he was trying to hook up and take it to the bailers for the money.

We used to race at a local track that used old Toyota corollas. My dad replaced the front suspension with Toyota Corolla rear end. The motor was a 22-R from the Celica I wrecked. Custom carb, the primaries and secondaries opened together, and since it was pre smogged, it was tuned really nice. Had a ton of power for that old hunk of metal. Way more than the straight 6 it came with. Autometer gauges and a custom dash. Looked like a race car on the inside minus the roll cage. It was a blast to drive.
