The 90s Rangers look absolutely tiny compared to Maverick, but they also had lesser crash crumple zones, different ride, etc...

The 90s Rangers are very similar to the Maverick in height and length, with the regular cab being shorter and the extended cab being longer. Width of the Maverick is about 4 inches wider.

I came this close to returning my Maverick two minutes off the dealer lot two years back. Because it is a horrific pig of a vehicle compared to the two-door Ranger I traded in. It's grown on me since, but I still consider the Maverick a bloated fat whale. Of course comparing the Maverick to my old Ranger is laughable because that Ranger was lovable but truly primitive (axle hop, leaf suspension, body on frame, noisy, horrific handling, zero safety tech, and gutless).

That said, I totally respect that people coming from bigger trucks consider the Maverick to be a svelte, petite ballet dancer. Like the thread says, it's all about perspective.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for a smaller market entry later this decade. Because of the perverse incentives of the CAFE regulations, it will have to be a BEV - you literally cannot build a truly small ICE truck these days because CAFE gets stricter as the wheelbase gets smaller - our idiot political masters at work.
I am still holding out hope for the Alpha Wolf to get built. Full electric, 2 door truck that is actually small.

Was the 2011 Ford Ranger not a compact? The Maverick is 4 inches shorter than the extended cab old Ranger, albeit a bit wider.

Back in 1983 the original Motorweek review for the Ranger called it a midsize truck which was puzzling to me until they parked it between an F150 and a Courier.

Size categories can be a little bit squishy but we already have full size trucks and midsize trucks and the Maverick is smaller than both of them so what else are we going to call it?

Whether or not it is too big for your tastes in absolute terms is a different question.

And a much smaller backseat. The proportions of the Maverick are different than the old Ranger but people tend to exaggerate how different they are in absolute size.

At the risk of triggering some folks...
have you seen the average size of Americans these days....yeah the trucks got bigger because the people did.
put an average kid/person of the 70,80,or 90s next to a kid/person of the 200s,2010, etc. and it will all be clear why the cars have got so big.

it's simple we got fat. ( me included )

that said I do like that the mavs. are 4 doors vs a small crew cabs of the older trucks.

I have to remind folks that my '23 4dr Bronco is 10" shorter than my '24 Maverick. The Bronco easily fits in my garage, the Maverick barely fits.

I hear it all the time how small the Maverick is, but maybe it's only small compared to the behemoths today's full sized trucks have become. Here is my Mav parked behind my 1999 Grand Marquis, a real full sized land yacht.
Even though it's shorter overall the Maverick looks quite large to me, what do you think?
I always love watching people trying to climb into and out of those monstrous trucks.

I've driven F-150's for years, and I consider my Mav a compact truck, which is exactly what I want. Full size, mid size and compact are all relative terms, and I'm quite alright calling my Mav a compact.

Great perspective! And shows how much everything has grown.we were just talking about this regarding snowmobiles on a recent forum.
