Hi folks,
Has anyone used the 12volt flex bed wire to power a 4 pin trailer light harness instead of running a wire all the way to the hybrid battery? It seems to make sense to me but I can’t find any instructions other than running the wire to the battery

Thank you. Any idea why the instructions for the Tekonsha are different and why E-trailer says the power has to go to battery?

Only a guess, but I imagine that very few vehicles provide the pre-wired 12V access like Maverick does, so the run direct to the battery is their normal installation.

Another possibility is that the bed power is only active while the vehicle is running, maybe it's a safety issue if the truck & trailer are on the shoulder with the 4-ways flashing, while the truck is off (not running)?

Their harness is specific to the Maverick. E-trailer tech support claims that wiring to the 12V AC outlet could cause electrical issues and even be dangerous. Perhaps they are just covering their ass?

There is constant 12 v power in rear panels , I have factory bed lights that turn on anytime locked , not locked , doors open , not open . It’s a simple constant 12v , you could use this ,just fuse accordingly for a on trailer constant 12 v charge for an emergency brake battery or such.

It would be nice if they would show the actual wiring. Is it possible to use the 12V pigtail to connect to the hitch harness power wire? The hitch harness has one wire and the pigtail has two. What do you do with the extra wire?
The pigtail has (1) positive (red) wire, and (1) negative/ground (black) wire. You can choose to use the pigtail ground, or a body ground w/screw.

Are you comfortable taking on this project?

I'm comfortable taking this on with the correct information. I'm wondering why they don't make this harness a straight plug and play. Please let me know if I have this straight.

Yes, you have that correct. Tekonsha has the white lead as ground (to pigtail black), and their black lead as power (to pigtail red). You could eliminate the yellow fuseholder, since the bed 12V is fused, by replacing the # 84 20A fuse with a 15A in the under-hood fuse box, or use them both.

Awesome! Thank you! Is there any reason not to do this(other than spending quality time with my truck while I crawl around on my back fishing wires)?

I've re-read thru this thread, and I'm not sure if you're installing a hitch or not. If not, why bother with the 4-flat connector? If yes, obviously you need a connection for the trailer lights.

Yes, I am installing a hitch. I ordered a maverick with the hitch receiver, but I got impatient and bought one that became available. The only thing missing from the one I have on order is the hitch receiver. I still haven't received a build date. My daughter in-law's parents are interested in the one I ordered. Thank you for your help.

I know this is an older thread and forgive me if I’m wrong but why would you attach the ground to the negative wire? The ground/white wire should attach to the frame of the car while the black one attaches to the positive 12V flex bed. The other flex bed negative connector can be left lose since the electrical loop runs anyway . Or does the negative flex bed wire run to the frame unseen? Either way I think it would work.

EDIT: For anyone who didn’t know for sure if the ground acts as a return or negative (like me) I DMed Hot Runr Guy and he confirmed that the return negative does go through the frame but it would work better for convenience to attach it to the flex bed 12V. Since it is the same thing
