I like the steel XL trim wheels. But hate the color. Also realistically, new wheels are a bit pricey considering I already have new wheels. Also it gets complicated when your looking to not gain any weight in the wheel. I want to maintain the mpg. The stock steel wheels are surprisingly light. Sure you can find lighter, but the options are limited in the bolt pattern. Most of the wheels are heavier. And if they are not heavier, I have to ensure I am not losing load capacity. Not that it matters for me, but I dont want to buy new wheels to lose load capacity.
So I figured I would try painting the spare wheel matte black to see how it would look. It stays under the Maverick anyways. So if I mess up, no biggie. Here is a picture of it painted. Not mounted on the maverick. I like how it turned out. I will proceed with doing all 4. I did 3 coats of self etching primer. Then did 4 coats of base paint. A little extreme, most do 3, but I am a little OCD and wanted to ensure I did not miss a spot. And then I did 3 coats of matte clear coat.
