The XL is lower profit for Ford and the dealer, so lower build priority. The XL is probably still on the constraint list, along with several other things like add-on hitch receiver, mud flaps, tonneau cover, etc. If your buddy has anything in red on this list, it may be holding up his build. He should remove any constraints from the order, if he can add them later or do without.

Also, you didn't say if he ordered from the same dealer as you, but if not, the dealer may be out of allocations, or the dealer didn't assign a good priority code (lower is better).

My xlt, terrain, awd, with spray in liner was scheduled for 11/16 but yesterday said in production. BUT I want the XL I ordered B4 it 7/18. So will buy the xlt park it in garage and advertise it. If it doesn't sell keep it i guess. I only ordered the xlt because the salesman called and said i might change my xl order to an an xlt as the xl might take forever to arrive. Maybe i'll get lucky and get a build date for the xl soon.

If you look at the weekly constrained lists posted on this website you will see that the XL orders far exceed the planned capacity. You can improve your odds by ordering one of the higher trim levels and ensuring your dealer has the needed allocations. Also keep constrained items to a minimum,

Here is the math:
XLT base price is $2915 more than XL.
As everyone knows the difference is mostly the rims. A few other items like tie downs and rear seat armrest are low cost. Alloy rims might be $800 more cost than steel, probably less cost than that with the volumes Ford buys. So Ford makes $2K more profit on each XLT.
Simple economics: build the XLT first wait for people to get impatient and change their order to XLT.

There were a lot of XL rollovers and XL orders are still above Ford's planned ratios for the year (though they have the capacity to build all current outstanding XL). If your dealer has several other XLs already in line as rollovers or lower priority numbers, your friend is in line behind them.

There are some dealerships that had so many XLs leftover from last year that they only had one or two allocation (or even none) left when MY24 opened up. In that case, the new orders are probably going to be built about a year from now since most of the year's allocations were already reserved and a better priority.

Your friend should have a discussion with the dealer about how many are head of him - though it's too late to switch to another dealer since XL order banks closed a month ago. You were able to get an XLT as that is the most available trim right now and the one Ford is making the most of.

We liked our XL so much I ordered another on the Granger $1,000 off deal. Told the wife, don't expect it for a year as this is a low margin sale for Ford and Granger. Somehow our number came up, and it is scheduled for the week of December 11th. Just a XL EB with 360 and hitch. Ford builds them, but I think you have to win the luck of the draw.

It is obvious that XL orders get the shaft from Ford! My order is a good example of this. I changed from hybrid to ecoboost when Ford said to, and nothing improved. 418 days and counting for a base XL. Only options are tow hitch and full size spare. Like others have said, Ford gives priority to the XLT and Lariat trims. They said they would give priority to rollover orders, but that has not proven to be true!

I believe Tim said they don't actually exceed the total build capacity, but as a share of unscheduled orders to planning percentage they're higher. So it just means they're going to take most of the model year to build out.

Evening, first time poster. I ordered my ‘24 XL on 7/20/23. Is to be built next week of the 20th. Can’t believe how fast it is getting built! Ordered from a very small dealer in Southern Oklahoma. Did doll it up with a bunch of stuff. Hybrid, tri-fold hard cover, tailgate lock, keypad entry, Co-Pilot 360, front PPF, spray in liner, bed leds, hitch. Cactus gray. Will do window tint and maybe a few little things after I get it. My coffee group is comprised of about 8 guys and 6 of us ordered Mavericks the same week. They all ordered from the local dealer. Most of those are Lariat’s or XLT’s. I believe one is an XL. They have gotten no correspondence from the dealer or Ford. Truly didn’t expect the truck to be built till spring! After driving a loaded ‘17 King Ranch F250 for 5 years and not needing that much truck I sold it earlier this year and ordered the Maverick in base form with just a few nice additions. Wanted to get to basics again.
