Improving the self driving capability will be so nice. Here is the link:

Let's be clear, I know pretty much nothing about comma 3, but I think it works on the 2023 XLT Lux, but doesn't in the 2022, but it works on the lariat both years.

Like I said I know pretty much nothing, is just something I found out few months ago on their website, I asked to a ford technician and he said sometimes is the same parts but the software capabilities can change between years and that could be the reason.

My question is whether there will be huge improvement over stock ACC. Will it worth the $1,500 investment?

Someone on this site was planning on installing it, he might did it, so patience is your best friend for now. According to the videos on YouTube it definitely worth it on my opinion specially for us on the XLT trim, but since everything I see I take it with a grain of salt.

I'm still not sure how long I gonna keep mine so not sure if I should jump or not, but for those holding their mavericks I would definitely consider it.

If you do the jump or might get info on the future please share it with us here, every bit of info could help to make a more educated guess or decision.

I also don't know how long I am going to keep my Maverick. In addition, I have Lariat with CP 360 assist, which already has ACC. Thus, spending another $1500 may not worth it. Of course, comma does not work on Maverick if the truck does not have 360 assist. The good thing is that the comma device also works on my other car, grand highlander, if not now probably soon.

Then in your case that you have two vehicles that are compatible it might worth it. on my case I'm on the fence, I'm waiting to see if I can a year behind lariat ( could be last year or from this year but in 2024) I know they had remaining lariat from last year and those goes for 6k or 8k less, and that's a good deal for me, is that or wait till they bring a electric pickup regardless of the size or cargo capacity, I don't carry nothing heavy on mine, I just love the convenience or a bed to carry bikes+kayaks etc.

I have the 3X up and running on my '22 Lariat Hybrid (with ACC and Lane Centering).

It was an absolute PITA to install. The cables are simple enough, but the firmware doesn't support the Mav, at least my model, right off the bat. There is an issue with the Hybrids where a checksum error gets thrown, so they don't enable it by default (for the time being, that may change). That error will disengage OP and driver has to take over immediately. So far it has not happened to me after 20+ hours of use, but I stay diligent. In order to get the firmware working, you either have to create your own fork of the stock comma.ai software, download it from someone that has, or SSH the edits in directly. It took me abut 20 minutes to wire it up. An entire day to figure out the issues and get them working on mine. The Discord channel was super helpful, but they are all pretty advanced software people and I am certain I annoyed them throughout the course of my install. I am happy to share the link for the version I used if anyone needs it, but not 100% certain it's still active.

Now that it's working, it's pretty great. Worth $1,500? Your call, but I can afford it and I plan to keep it.

The lane centering / self driving is fantastic. It rarely needs to be disengaged and I've driven an hour+ on the highway without having to engage. No nags to grab the wheel, but it does nag if you aren't paying attention since it's interior camera tracks you. It handles modest curves much better than stock lane centering and shows you it's predicted path, so if something coming up looks sketchy, you can see if it's tracking it.

The longitudinal control (gas and braking) is another factor. On the base firmware it uses the factory ACC - which works pretty well. You can toggle on OP's control which I think could potentially be better than factory at some point, but right now it modulates the throttle way to much for comfort and seems to be forever hunting for the right speed. I also noticed that it doesn't get up to the speed I set it quickly enough, or at all, which is frustrating. I just went back to the stock firmware.

Overall, I am really happy with it and am hopeful it will continue improving. There are other forks of the firmware that have a lot of promise as well and I haven't tried them. After my trauma from the initial install I'll probably wait a while before venturing into that world. The improved lane centering is really good and that combined with the factory ACC makes for a solid combo.

Can you share some useful links? Is there a write-up about the installation and updating process for Maverick specifically?

There aren't really many / any that I found besides the Discord channel. Go to the Comma.Ai discord channel and then the Ford sub-channel. That's where everything is, sprinkled between discussions on other Ford vehicles. You can search for "maverick" or "hybrid" to find relevant info.

The basic install is straightforward just like in the comma install videos - a plug goes into the OBDII port that has an ethernet cable that runs to a small box you put in the plastic molding above / behind the rear-view mirror. That box also plugs into the port for the camera for ACC up there. The same box also has a USB -C cable that goes to the 3x. Put all the wires behind that trim piece and various trim pieces getting up there for the wiring. It can be done in 15-30 min.

As for the software install, I will be glad to share the install link with anyone that PM's needing it for their unit, but I don't want to widely post it as: 1. not sure it still works, 2. not sure it will work for your model, 3. it isn't mine (although public on github), 4. it is highly experimental and you use it entirely at your own risk... It was created by one of the folks on the discord channel and the link is in there as well.

If I'd had that link to start, it would have taken 5 minutes for the entire software install, rather than a full day chasing down various errors, trying to fingerprint, trying to SSH and creating my own forks, etc.

comma REALLY needs to make this clear vs 100% bury it: you have to have an Ecoboost. There is a bug with hybrid checksums and they don’t have a fix and aren’t putting resources into it.

Another thing everyone should be aware of: this is alpha level software sold as a dev kit. You need some level of technical competence to be able to SSH and run git commands, it’s buggy, bugs change from version to version, and it’s a work in progress. That said I’ve happily ran it since 2019 and a few friends now run it too.
My question is whether there will be huge improvement over stock ACC. Will it worth the $1,500 investment?
huge improvement over stock lane keep - no change to ACC, I run stock Ford ACC as OP is very jerky (it’s also jerky in my friends Toyota, but smoother…). I’ve had it for the last 4yrs, 3 in my old car and 1 in my Mav, and it’s well worth it IMO. I paid more like $2k as I got it before the two price drops Comma did this year, and I still think it was worth every penny.
I'm still not sure how long I gonna keep mine so not sure if I should jump or not, but for those holding their mavericks I would definitely consider it.
You can use it on your next car too if you buy something supported. I wouldn’t buy an unsupported car lol. It’s how picked my last two cars.

So does this unit require the truck to already have adaptive cruise control, or does it add adaptive cruise control? I thought the only trim that you could add adaptive cruise control was the lariat.
The website specifically calls for Copilot 360 Assist, which is the lariat package, and not available on the XL or XLT. perhaps I am just confused? That happens a lot :)

You have it correct. Comma only works with a Lariat. It requires the ACC module. You would have to self-mod the ACC module onto a lower trim level.

Thank you! I want ACC, but not at the price of a lariat.

You can hack ACC on, there is a thread about it.

I'm not sure if it's frustrating or comforting, but Ford does offer the Ranger (and F150) with ACC in the XLT trim. It's in the technology package and a XLT with it is a lot cheaper than a Lariat.

Maybe in MY25 Ford will offer that with the Maverick XLT.
