Yeah I see what you are saying and I agree but these particular "protectors" are literally made of metal and I don't think they would hold their bond if run up the curve. They need a flat surface.

And being made of metal, they will scratch easily just adding another layer of expense.
Yeah I think different users have different issues. I have no children and only my wife with me most the time so scratches are not a common issue. It does seem to me that what people should be trying to protect with these is the plastic area and not the metal because that area is much more vulnerable to scratching. Like you said though a longer more pliable solution is better for protection and less expensive.
I placed these according to directions and obviously they are much more for looks than protection.
