Yeah, that's the 4 door. Don hardy chassis, man those were crazy how they built them, stacked frame rails, like 1 inch tube, thin as he'll. And they acid dipped body's to the point they felt like tin foil LOL.
When I worked at a machine shop 15 years ago, I rebuilt my bosses Vega he ran in the mid 70s, it was a Don hardy chassis too.

I think the 68 Mustang with the CJ was one of the quickest cars MT tested back in the day. My 428 was sadly not in a Mustang.

Sure do miss my old Maverick. Selling it got me here to Maui, where I met my wife and together we were able to buy the Hot Pepper Red Tremor I'm sitting in right now. It's a good replacement for my high strung Burnt Orange and Flat Black 306/C4 "Shelby" Maverick. Sure it could probably hit 150mph but only seconds before it would murder me as punishment. I even used it to move once. Had 330lbs of weights half the tools in my garage in it and barbell running from the front to back seat. It got me a couple girlfriends but one was a cheat and the other was gonna be a hassle. I used to run it about as hard as the Duke boys but I could tell that wasn't gonna last very long. Right now while my wife is at work, I got 2 propane tanks 17 gallons of drinking water, laundry for us and my mother in-law, 2 medium sized dogs with more room than they ever had before, room for groceries still, an open seat for a hitchhiker(since my wife is working today) , and ice cold AC. It's got similar power on the bottom end and will definitely hold up better racing the dirt roads(if you think the modern one was built cheap:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:).

I do miss that old Maverick, but the similar dash in my new one makes me miss it a little less as I appreciate this Maverick even more.

A side note the 306 short block in my old Maverick was built by Ohio George Montgomery. He used to have a 427 in his Maverick.

I like the old school looking dash also.
Radio controls are right where they should be. Nice picture 👍

Yeah the moment I saw it in the pictures I saw it as Maverick dash.

My best friend in high school had an older brother that bought a new 73 Mercury Comet GT and dropped a Ford 396 small block in it with headers and cherry bomb glasspacks. Quick little car.

I knew a guy that had a faded red 68 Z28 with 3.73’s and some headers. He was persuaded to take it to Alamo Dragway one Saturday, car ran high 13’s. We were shocked, not sure what rpm he was shifting at.
Another guy I knew pretty well had 66 Mustang with a Boss in it. It was almost stock except for the cam, headers and carburetor. Had 5 something gears and a 4 speed, it ran low 11’s at over 120. He would rev it to the moon!
Wow 5 something rear. Hate to drive that down the highway. The Chevy 302 had what is called tge duntov cam. Solid lifters. Have to rev it high to get any power. Both the Boss and Z/28 where a bit different than the big blocks of the time.

August 1969 Motor Trend article:
Maverick V-8 On The Loose
Apparently a So Cal Ford dealer, Chuck Foulger decided to drop a BOSS 302 in a innocent looking Maverick. What could have been…….. Probably with a little tuning and some TIRES, it would have embarrassed many a muscle car! Low 14’s from an unmodified car in 69 was getting it on. I have an extensive magazine collection 🤨 much to my wife’s joy😉

I didn’t see that option when I built my 2022 Maverick.

Just a note. I believe those engines were specifically built for the Trans Am racing series. Stangs and Z28 and AMC Amx.

The car was just a drag strip car only.
The original 302 was a 327 block with a 283 crank and big valve heads. You are correct about the cam, the Duntov 30-30. 30-30 was the valve lash setting. The Boss had stuff like 4 bolt mains, screw in freeze plugs, 289 hi po rods, HD balancer, 351 Cleveland type heads with a water crossover port along with quite a few other things. Both were built for road racing and extended high rpm use, not too much low end torque but some serious high rpm hp.

That’s right and Pontiac and MOPAR both had 5 liter engines too. Kinda ironic that Pontiac never won a race and in the Trans Am series 😳, I think 🤔.
