Ford Maverick 😱😦 WHOA! Auto Start/Stop Saved my Maverick from being T-Boned autostartsto

AS/S FTW!

I was sitting at a stop light in Olympia, Washington today. I was on a narrow street, stopped at a light crossing a busy one way street. I'm just sitting there waiting for my light turn green so I can cross the one way road and continue on my way.

Light turns green, and I go and move my foot off the brake and hit the throttle. Then the auto start delay happens and I just start to move forward and...

WHOOSH

Someone blew through that light on the one way street in the lane closest to me. Probably doing 50 MPH+. Just 2-3 feet from my Cyber Orange Maverick. I couldn't see him because the sight lines are poor with buildings close to the street and vehicles parked along the one way. I think the speed limit is 30 MPH.

I am absolutely convinced if it weren't for that momentary delay caused by the Auto Start/Stop, I would have been in his travel lane and would have hit me. At such a high speed it would have been a horrible T-bone collision. At best, it would have totaled my new Maverick which would not even be replaceable at this point. And worst, I could have been seriously injured or killed. I hope it freaks that guy out and he slows down and pays attention.

I am not posting this to advocate or try to get anyone to change your mind for Auto Start/Stop. There are a lot of posts about the dislike of AS/S. To each their own. And this is not its intended use/benefit. But I can tell you I will definitely keep using it. It's been over an hour and I am still shaking. And if I save fuel/money, that's a bonus!

I don't even know if something like this will happen again so long as I own this Maverick. But I didn't expect it to happen today, either.

First, glad you were saved by the auto-start/stop!

I have a part-time job driving a bus and see alot of inattentive drivers (texting?) every day. And also those that are too self-important to obey a stoplight or other traffic laws (get out of my way I'm coming through 'cause I'm special).

Not to make little of your experience, but sometimes I feel like imitating Gomer Pyle "Citizen's Arrest! Citizen's Arrest!"

So glad no one was hurt.

Glad you're ok. Similar situation happened to me 11 years ago, someone ran the red at full speed and was t-boned by myself and another vehicle (cross traffic). Scary situation. Since then I hesitate 1-3 seconds after the light changes before I go for that reason, so I can appreciate your reasoning for AS/S use.

I make it a habit to look both ways and I've been honked at for it before. I try to pay attention to when the light is about to turn, but honestly, I couldn't care less if the people behind me have to sit for 1-3 more seconds.

I've only seen this happen like OP mentioned one time, where they were hauling ass and just blew the red light, and about 4 cop cars followed. Granted, that was in CA (Northwest Mexico) and it was a pretty shady area. I believe they call it... San Diego?

This is how I lost my 2 year old Mazda B2000 in 1997 in downtown Portland, Oregon. The offending car was a ‘68 Pontiac with that Chrome knife for a bumper, the Truck hit every corner as it spun like a top from the impact, every corner of the car including the passenger side firewall was smashed, my spouse got bruises from stick shift, steering wheel, driver door and seat belt but thankfully ok. The Pontiac hit the firewall area on the passenger side so hard that the dash completely blew all the controls and stereo out into the compartment.

I never take off immediately at a green light here in Honolulu if I am in front, EVER! That crap scared the hell out of me when I saw the Mazda truck the next day…
