This occurred almost in my back yard but I am certain it is more common than we know. The link is to an article where Ford dealers were caught selling customer ordered vehicles, selling them as if they were in their dealer inventory and then playing dumb:

https://www.yahoo.com/autos/two-ford-dealers-sold-custom-170900691.html
I will never understand dealers doing crap like this! Making some extra money on a vehicle but losing a potential life-long customer! Dumb move by dealerships!

Aloha Lance - the link I posted just showed up. Could be old news. Interesting that HI news would cover a story like this. I'm sure SoCal dealers are playing games and turning customer ordered Mavs into inventory where 2.0 EB sell for $6-7k above MSRP and hybrid Mavs sell for $9-11k over MSRP. HI is small and everyone is kamaaina so a dealer would get a bad reputation real fast. FoMoCo uses the fact that dealers are independent but seems to me a dealer that sells a custom-ordered vehicle out from under a customer as dealer inventory misrepresented themselves to Ford.

Tell that to Honolulu Ford... their business practices are unsavory and greedy based on forum members experiences.

Right now the times are in their favor but the times are changing and no loyalty will bite them.

The News Video was from SoCal, not here, so its happening everywhere. I think the markup is strategically the same thing as selling your order though.

So I think the dealer that Ford referred me to when I made the order here in Honolulu in ‘21 initially doesn’t care. They are marking Special Orders up 35% (said my $29,850 XLT Lux had an added mark up to $41,000!) and they are hoping you walk!
The son of a prominent local activist and musician went through this last week, he posted it here. They walked out that night and said it wasn’t over. Well the dad came in the next morning to the dealership and I guess he whipped the Kama’aina Aloha back into them. Appears that FORD Corporate was there at the same time! I came in that day and told them don’t want the sales person and the finance manager yelling at me about some lie they allegedly told me 630 days ago. So we wrote up a deal that still sucks…anyway the truck is DOCKING at 7pm tonight in Honolulu Harbor, stay tuned!

Everything you said should be obvious to FoMoCo but I sent a message to them and they said “We will let the Sales Manager know” He’s the one who wrote the Mav up 35%! Nutz I tell yah…

That sucks, if corporate had any balls they would terminate dealership agreements with dealerships with these unethical practices.

They could literally cut out the new car dealers. To the naysayers:
1. Contract with reputable mechanic shops for service and maintenance. Most people don't trust dealer service departments anyway.
2. Deliver cars to your house like carvana delivers. They already have destination fees built in.
3. Everything else is bought online, why not.
4. Test drives? No, just read the reviews.

Am I really leaving something out?

I wonder if FoMoCo corporate flew to Honolulu before/after SoCal?

I was hoping, but am not surprised that the FoMoCo guy assigned to monitor this forum hasn't chimed in on the games dealers are playing with custom Mav orders.

I understand free enterprise. The Mossy Ford dealer [San Diego CA 92109] mentioned in the original post charges $162.50 for an "express" oil and filter change with full syn oil. I can choose to go elsewhere. But if I place a custom order in good faith, I expect to be treated fairly, not used. To reiterate from my original post, FoMoCo is winking at dealers who turn a custom order into a profit center by not giving the customer an opportunity to "claim" their ordered vehicle. That is deceitful.

Yeah, you're leaving out the elephant in the room; franchise laws set up in every state of the US that prohibit car manufacturers from cutting out franchised dealerships and using direct sales instead.

It's important for companies like Ford to maintain transparency and ensure that customers who place custom orders are treated fairly and given the opportunity to claim their ordered vehicles without being subjected to deceptive practices. If you feel that your experience has been unfair or deceitful, it's a good idea to voice your concerns directly to Ford or the dealership involved. Providing feedback and holding companies accountable for their actions can help improve the overall customer experience and potentially influence positive changes in their practices.
What you say makes sense. But, unfortunately, I think you are whistling in the wind.
No disrespect meant. Most of us are considered mal contents! I contacted Ford on a veteran's rebate. The fine print indicated order or take possession by 7/5. I can't possess what they can't build in a timely manner! They denied me saying orders had to be placed sometime in May. Nebulous fine print indicated no such thing!
