Has anyone experience the felt on their hard roll top tonneau cover coming loose due to being under direct sun?

I park my truck on the street and it gets subjected to currently very extreme temp. I saw the felt completely hanging loose the whole length of tonneau cover and just holding on both ends.

I was successfull in re attaching it with its existing glue but just came off just after a day. I don't think it requires a trip at the dealership but it's annoying nonetheless!

Should I just glue the heck out of it or would that compromise a possible warranty repair? I don't think it affects the function of the cover at all. So I'm thinking of just ripping it completely off!

Search BAK x4 on Youtube. Ford uses this with their logo for the "factory" cover. The sun melting the glue is a common problem. The x4s is a much better cover without the felt.

Doing the same to mine. Live here in Texas and it started falling of in March. On a hot day recently I rolled it up without the felt and that aluminum was screaming hot. It was only in the 80's I can't imagine touching it when the outside temperature reaches 100

Same happening in IL, but only on the starboard side (weird). Attempted to reattach 2x’s, fruitless.

Reattached 3 days ago after a refresh with contact cement, haven’t checked if it worked…but will now that my memory has been jogged!

Not miserable, but I now know I have company. Lovely.

Same boat here.
It's an easy enough thing to pull off, but for what it cost, I feel like Ford should make it right. I mean, for a truck that's a touch over a year old, how do they expect this to hold up for 4, 5 or 10+ years?
I talked to the service department when I was in having my recall done and they said they would look into it. The big thing that helped me was that it was on the window sticker. Hopefully yours was, too!

Had that happen on Revolver I used on Ram 3500. Felt fell off same summer I installed it. On that one w/o the felt the aluminum joints tended to jam.
Later vinyl started going bad along with side seams.
Super hot in the sun.
Replaced it with Pro X15 and using another on the Maverick.

6+ day update on ‘the fix’…

The Fix appears to be holding, so far. The Starboard felt strip was reattached using 3oz of Weldwood Contact Cement (Ace Hardware), brushed onto the felt (first) and then (secondly) onto the underside of the tonneau cover, using the ‘as built’ glue locations as a guide.

Yes, it’s a pita to brush onto the underside, cover closed, shop light to illuminate, laying on your back on a moving blanket, which was important to catch the errant drips that couldn’t be avoided.

15-minutes all in, once the blanket, light and felt strip were prepped.

Maybe it’ll last a few years. For now, it’s ‘fixed’ without a huge cost or time investment.

On to the day…

So I took mine in for the Warranty and I just heard back that there is a fix for this. There is a newly engineered piece to go on the underside of the tonneau cover without these felt pieces. I just got the phone call. I will update here once I see it in person and it is installed.

Good to know. My ‘hillbilly engineered’ Weldwood Contact Cement ‘fix’ is holding, currently, but a Ford fix will be better.

I’ll stay tuned…

Thanks for the update.

I tried to have mine replaced but no luck. I was just simply given the solution to replace the felt which is currently out of stock!

Please do update us once you get yours fix! I'm hoping it'll be like the underside of the X4s.

It's a dumb design to begin. Without the felt, the glue keeps liquifying under hot condition and keeps sticking on my things underneath. I also was very stupid to forget the felt was to make the roll top not hot when you open and grabbed it with my bare hands! I ought to tell them that potential risk of injury so they can act on it! I also thought about eating the cost of having it completely replaced but not quite there yet.

All fixed!!! So worth it and cost me nothing! I recommend if you have this problem and they try to give you more felt.... ask for this and/or show them this.

My Ford guy told the Ford Accessories (that I believe is a third party) that his customer did not want a piece of felt. He told them I wanted a replacement with a newly engineered model. Or a re-engineered solution. They said they didn't know if that was an option, but 2 weeks later, they came back with this new backing. My Ford Guy David inspected it with me as this is the first my he has done and he was impressed with it, as was I.
