I get it, that fuel savings over something like your Ram can add up over time and help offset the cost...

But did you have to buy a new maverick at ( how much over MSRP ? ) to get into something that gets better MPG?

For 10-12 grand you could buy a used prius or hybrid escape, or VW TDI and be into something that nets you 45-50 mpg. For 25 grand you could pick up a new hybrid corolla. For 15-25 grand there are countless really really really nice lightly used vehicles that can net you 25-35 mpg.

I get the logic you used to buy the Maverick, but if just being thrifty with money was the goal, seems like paying over MSRP for a maverick might not have been the most thrifty thing you could have done.
Just to be clear.... I picked up my XL Hybrid Maverick last week at MSRP ($23,835 out the door after taxes & rebates).

But my point was.....had I know it would be a 550+ day wait from October 2021 to May 2023....then I would have gladly paid $5K-$7K ADM early on..... because the fuel savings would have easily offset the additional purchase $$$.

And....I NEVER EVER buy used cars (except for classic cars). I don't want somebody else's headache. I don't need somebody else's problem. With the RIDICULOUS hourly amount they charge here in SoCal for repairs ($100-$175 PER HOUR).......the roll of the dice is too big for me to inherit the unknown.

... back when it wasn't clear what a runaway success the Maverick was going to be, and when the new and used markets had not yet "taken off" the way they did later on. But good for you, man! You got a heck of a price for a heck of a truck, and should be very happy. I wish I had known about the Maverick back then - I might have been lucky as well...
No they were still some dealers charging over MSRP then.

I shopped around dealers, couple were over MSRP and wanted deposits to order.

I picked up my 2023 XL hybrid yesterday at George Wall Ford in RedBank NJ after a 567 day wait from the original order in Oct 2021 and later 2023 reorder in September.

Luckily I was able by keeping up in the forum and watching the Long McArthur videos to be on top of the transaction process. Other than not getting the LIST price at my last change in order options in January (tried did this without a signed order). Had a new salesman as the original one and the Sales Manager had both moved on during this time and the dealership showroom was in the middle of a refit (upgrading to sell the Model e's?)

I did get the sticker price and my private offer honored without issues, skipped all of the extended warranty up sell (not too hard) and no DIO add on's. While not the best buying experience I have ever had it was a friendly and polite deal.

The dealers are making a killing! Generally, selling at msrp for most of us and adding exorbitant doc fees. I hate paying msrp, but that its what most of us are up against.
It is interesting to note some constraints that still exist. However, every time I call Ford marketing, they tell me I am good to go? XLT Hybrid, 360, drop in liner, mud guards and a few their goodies. If Ford doesn't get their act together, 2024 may be a big flop! I am not going to wait for 2024!

There will always be folks who don't think twice about being upside down on a car payment, providing they can make payments... There are folks who always have a car payment their entire life, perennial borrowers for their personal transportation. They don't have the same aversion to poor financial decision making as those of us who are more frugal. In the end, they don't even care about the final sale price... provided someone can absorb the upside down vehicle that they are trading in and they can afford the resulting payment on the new ride.

There is another group of car buyer that is constantly dissatisfied with their current ride, always wants to change, always wants something new. They either have the money or have no issues being in debt to obtain the money to satisfy their whims. Again, these folks are different from those of us who will continue to drive a vehicle that we've long grown bored with, because it continues to provide good utility and makes financial sense.

There is a final group with healthy resources where the extra money is not an issue. They can afford to obtain what they want now, regardless of price. Can't fault them, maybe envy them. But I don't think this is the group primarily paying more... I think it's the other two I described.

Ok, my editorial for the day. LOL
This post epitomized the incredible arrogance of some on this forum... What credentials do you hold that would allow YOU to explain for me WHY I did what I did? You know nothing of the circumstances that informed my decision... But you just have to post this unmitigated BS in order to proclaim to the world just how superior YOUR judgement is than mine, and then to further explain that I must be either stupid, foolish, or so rich I don't care, because I chose to pay above MSRP for my Maverick...

Let that soak in for a moment before you post again, telling me how it's me (and others like me) that are the "bad guys" in this situation...

As I said once before, the OP asked for a response from those who DID pay over MSRP, and asked us to explain why we did so. Since you clearly did NOT purchase a Maverick for MSRP++, and you were equally obviously NOT living inside the head of someone who DID so, you have no knowledge or insight to contribute to the discussion. We do NOT need to hear your explanation why YOU think someone else acted the way they did – which is pure speculation on your part.

If you just really feel the need to rant and rave about the folks who are "ruining everything" by following the free market pricing system, there are plenty of other threads created for people do exactly that... Please don't pollute this thread started by a guy who appears genuinely curious about our motivation to do so... And don't confuse him with your uninformed opinions and biases.

Of do you really believe YOU know better than I know why I chose to spend extra to get a Maverick? If so, that is way beyond arrogant... Case in point:
  • I'm not "upside down" on my Maverick loan, because I paid cash - money I had in savings from selling two other vehicles for well above market value
  • I'm not a "perennial borrower" - I owe exactly $0.00 to anyone in this world.
  • I believe I make good financial decisions - after all, I was able to retire, debt free, at 58, with a lifestyle that is comfortable if not extravagant.
  • I drive pretty much every vehicle I purchase until I no longer need the utility it provides (that's why I sold my big HD truck after we sold the 5th wheel), or until it becomes unreliable to the point I won't risk my wife traveling in it.
  • I'm nowhere near wealthy, though a few dollars one way or the other are not going to make or break me. But I am willing to give up going to restaurants, for instance, to be able to pay cash for my vehicles.
Maybe it is as Forest Gump says; 'Stupid is as stupid does.' Who knows? lol
Well, at least you "LOL" at the end of your insult, so I'll take that as humor... Otherwise, I'd have to say "Living up to your user name again..." LOL

I was going to respond "one more time" to FischAutoTechGarten's even more ridiculous response above, but Ford Truck Guy pretty much exposed him for who he is - a troll. I tried being rational, but he's not interested in understanding anyone's viewpoint but his own.
I've never blocked anyone on any forum - until now. I'm done putting up with his crap.

I paid 10k over last October for my XL Hybrid. I’ve put I’ve 37,000 miles on it already. So, on top of fuel savings, those are 37,000 miles that didn’t go on my superduty !

WRONG, I paid a lot more and that is my business. Why the long diatribe in the first place. Get in over your head? O hell, what do I care. Actually I do...don't get in over your head.

It boils down to these three things.

Which is least painful for you, or conversely, which is most joyful for you?

Yes it is this and only this.
Yes you have to pick one of these three if you want a new Maverick. This represents 99.9% of all persons. We're not talking about sleeping with the owner to get one, getting one from your brother, your mother, or your "brother from another mother", or inheriting one from your now dead uncle.

A) Pay $3k, $4k, or $5k extra over MSRP to get a Maverick right away. (All those marked $10k ADM can be negotiated down. Really. Keep driving till you find one.)

B) Wait 3, 4, or 5 changings of the seasons to get a Maverick at MSRP or whatever price you have a contract for.

C) Do not get a Maverick.

Mic Drop.
Case closed.

There shall be no further comments here because that says it all.

I didn't pay over list, but I would've if given the option for a truck speced the way I wanted (hybrid, preferably lariat) and the reason was my old car.

My car was on its last legs when I ordered my maverick and I had hoped it would last until delivery. I ordered in September 2021 and it arrived in January of 2022. Lariat hybrid, no lux, no 360, but did get the spray in bed liner, the 110 outlet, hitch, and spare.

After tax, delivery, dock fee, I was at nearly $30k.

The problem was my car didn't make it.

In October the head gasket that was leaking ruptured completely and was going through a gallon of straight water in about 30 miles. The car wasn't worth saving as I knew it was destined for the junk yard. No interior lights, two power windows had failed, the odometer and dash lights stopped working, the transmission was slipping in overdrive, the computer was not able to keep the car running on startup that you needed to manually keep the rpms at 800rpm for idle speed, the previous owner had run the wrong coolant that created internal rust, and was consuming oil (not leaking). If not for the transmission I probably would've pulled the head and fixed it and not even considered buying the maverick. But in addition to all that the car was held together with intricate layers of rust.

I got the car free years ago and like all my cars I drive them until they're towed to the junk yard. And once at certain point is reached, palliative care is the only course of action. No major repairs. Drive it until it dies.

It actually drove for over 25000 miles losing water. First at about 1 gallon per 3000 miles, to 1 gallon per 1000 miles and then near the end every hundred miles. It had a dead cylinder at the very end which lasted about two months.

Incredibly, I was still getting the usual mpg out of it until the very end. The transmission was easy as you just couldn't run overdrive and you couldn't let it lag at 45mph. Either let it drop a few more mph or gun it.

Overall though I put nearly 100k on that car in the four or so years I had it. It was a fun one to drive. Took it to Texas twice. Iowa. And all over around home.

But she finally died. And I needed something until my maverick arrived. So I looked at used cars and was shocked at the prices. So bought the cheapest thing I could. A 2006 Town and Country for $500. It was no longer inspectable in PA. Due to rust. Only got 16mpg. Took it to Iowa and Minnesota. Only thing good about it was the heat and ac were fantastic. And it was comfortable to drive.

Sold it to a friend after I got my maverick. Thought about keeping it as a backup but figured if a brand new vehicle needed a backup it wasn't worth buying. Plus it saved me the registration and insurance. Which wasn't much.

But if I could've paid more to get a hybrid maverick immediately, I would've spent several thousand more probably without issue. But only a hybrid. And probably would've accepted an xl or xlt which overall probably would've been less money.

But $5k or $10k? Doubtful. But who knows. If anyone had one and I hadn't yet bought that town and country, maybe.
