7k km mileage - hybrid or ecoboost?

Debating if a hybrid would benefit me given the low mileage I put on. I do 80% city driving so hybrid seems to make sense but with my low yearly mileage would gas savings be really worth it? Ecoboost I can still order here in Canada. 3-6mths supposedly. I'm not sure how ecoboost engines fare on short trips but I know any ICE engine in general dont like it. My commute is what it is (16km roundtrip). I'm looking at the simple XL trim.​

Here's a table that will give you a sense of the cost savings based on different driving scenarios. I've highlighted your 80-20 mix. I've set it at 4000 miles/year (a little less than 7000KM) and added what I think (based on a quick google search) is the average price per gallon in Canda in USD ($4) and CAD ($6). Sorry it's not fully converted to Cannuck (my worksheet is set up for the US).

Also keep in mind that hybrids generally do significantly worse MPGs on short cold trips.

Cold climate and knowing batteries hate the cold, I would go ecoboost

Thank you for that table. My napkin math came to about a 500$ CAD difference. So the savings going hybrid really aren't there for me in my current situation.

So hybrid are good for city drives but suck for really short city drives? I did not know that, I figure my current car never gets up to temp by the time I get to work.

Hard to say your overall impact. The EPA estimates do factor in cold weather starts so it's built into the numbers, but you can expect low 30s for short/cold trips in below freezing, but once you get to 40+ degrees you can also expect to see 50+mpgs on city trips. Tends to even out in the end.

Interesting, so worse but no worse than an ICE engine.
Yeah, it's a significant drop compared to what you can get in warmer weather, but will still be better than an ICE equivalent. When I got my mav hybrid last winter, I was doing a daily 4 mile roundtrip each morning to drop the kid off at school. I had a Corolla ICE before, and was able to compare a month of each basically just doing that compute in cold weather. The Corrolla was generally mid-low 20s and the Mav was low 30s. Key with a hybrid is to not try to heat the cabin too much during the short drives because it will keep the ICE on pretty much until the cabin comes up to temp.

Battery voltage can drop in the cold for sure, but it's heat that damages/kills batteries. ;)

Thanks to the liquid system in the Maverick, it can heat/cool the hybrid battery to keep it in optimal operating temperature range.

Still better than most ICE vehicles, unless its well below freezing and you are doing a 2 minute drive or something like that. Any vehicle is going to do poorly in that scenario.

Losing voltage, can kill and damage a battery just as a frozen battery will be be killed.

Dropping voltage does not kill or damage batteries. Being cold just means the cold cranking amps drop, it doesn't damage the batteries health over all. Heat kills batteries. Cold can reveal an already weak of failing battery, nothing more.

If batteries died if they froze, every vehicle battery in Canada would be dead 6 months of the year.
Guess trickle doesn't exist either then.

Thanks everyone for your input.

We're gonna hold out for a hybrid XL whether one trickles into a dealership or when order banks open. It's a race now between who arrives first; the niro hybrid on order or the maverick. Hybrid XL.
