Fun summer classic cars?

spotted this triumph the other day. i currently drive an ‘03 Mustang GT convertible. it so fun to drive but i am really looking forward to the easy driving life with a 2023 Maverick.

I've had a half a dozen 3-series BMW convertibles over the years. They're affordable and pretty reliable and a lot of fun with a manual transmission and they have a back seat (such as it is) so you can take more friends along for the ride. I like the E30 and E46 series the best.

Never really been a convertible fan. I love the T-tops on my Trans Ams, but that was as close as I cared to get. I now have my Mom's '95 Mustang GT convertible since she passed in September. I'll drive it in her memory. I would like to find a '65 Datsun Fairlady someday though.

I've had a half a dozen 3-series BMW convertibles over the years. They're affordable and pretty reliable and a lot of fun with a manual transmission and they have a back seat (such as it is) so you can take more friends along for the ride. I like the E30 and E46 series the best. 

Like the look of those for sure. Definitely consider myself more classic but can't go wrong with that.

This is a wonderful series of posts for taking a look at something fun. I have had any number of cars that fall in this category. For sheer unadulterated brute speed my 1971 Boss 351 Mustang (Southeast Asia PX buy) picked up August 13, 1971 the day after I got back in the states, takes the cake. Loud, fast, deep growl and plenty of grunt it had it all. Paid 3950 for it, sold it during the 73 gas crisis. Had an 87 Porsche 911 with a chip and exhaust on it that had a certain way about it. It was fast, loud and sophisticated, but really expensive to maintain. My wife's 95 Mercedes 500SL was deceptively fast and almost too comfortable driving FAST, great for touring. It could get you in trouble before you realized. Although my recent favorite would be my 2002 Boxster. Beautiful blue with tan leather interior. Handled like a dream, just a sweet fun ride. Sold it when I lost my left eye; afraid I would merge onto the highway and end up under a semi. Sold it too fast a knee jerk reaction, should have waited, oh well. All of them fit the "fun" category and would work well. Depending on what I was going for, probably would say the 911 or the Boxster as first choice, but the Boss 351 was a beast! Now looking forward to my Maverick to be my new fun car.

Your BOSS 351 is my favorite car of all time. Before I bought the Shelby I tried to buy one. They are hard to find and way out of my price range.

That Boss was bright blue with argent hood and stripes. Ordered it with the manual competition steering and it was a workout to drive slow. Had about 26000 miles when I sold it and I regret it to this day. Got about $2800 for it . Loved it, sold it and stuck with my 240Z for a while. Had some Shelby pieces on my 65 K code Mustang , taken off a wrecked GT350 race car. Very interesting machine, didn’t have the grunt of the Boss but handled a bit better. I looked for another Boss for a few years recently, but couldn’t justify $55-65K for a decent example and the new entry fee is worse. Plus my butt enjoys a little more comfort these days. Got to drive a real 427 Cobra SC back in 69 and that is a whole different kind of wild!

I would say the obvious - a Ford Maverick.

Looking for a fun summer car to pair with the Maverick. Ideally it would have a manual transmission and be a convertible. Have been looking at a MGB or Fiat but would love to hear your experiences and suggestions. I know both of those are kinda hit and miss but love the look of them.

I have owned many sports cars over the years, If your looking for something in the 5 to 10K range, look at Miatas, MGBs, Midgets, may get lucky with a Mustang or Falcon-Comet 6 cly. You will have to go up in price for an exotic foreign car, or american convertible. Half the fun is hunting for something you like. The cars I recommended are cheap to maintain, be careful with Porsches, the new Thunderbirds, BMWs, Audis etc, these cars are expensive to repair!

I was going to say e30 convertible, but plastic bumper with the basket weaves, they are kind of stupid money right now though.

I would also suggest ditching 4 wheels and embracing 2 lol

I have been into Porsche 914’s for years. Tons of cruising and backroad fun. Everyone seems to have a fun story about them. Targa top stores in the trunk when want to go with out the top on. Huge community of support on 914world.com. I have owned Sunbeam Alpines, 911SC Targa, BMW M3, 1966 Bronco, as toy cars, but the 914 has brought me the most enjoyment.

Your talking about 914’s brought back some good memories. I bought a 72 914 in 1983 when I was stationed at Ft Belvoir, VA. Had a great time on some of the back roads around there. I couldn’t leave leave it alone and ended up putting a big bore kit on it and twin Delorto carbs on it and auto crossed it. Unfortunately the mods jumped it up a class or two and actually made me less competitive. I had it shipped to Hawaii in 1987 and was totaled when it was dropped at the port. Really sorry to lose it. Replaced it with a Triumph Spitfire, but it wasn’t the same. 914’s are pretty good handling cars and were Really nice!
