I wonder if they will find a way to tax electricity. You will get a form at the end of the year from the electric company saying how much you paid for the EV tax and if you do not have an EV you get it back in a state issued tax credit.As we transition to EVs (and hybrids) fuel tax revenue will decline. States are well aware of this and are actively looking at how to recover that income. Oregon tested a mileage fee system some years ago but there were some privacy concerns.
We will end up with some combination of licensing fee or mileage fee eventually.
No easy answers. Enjoy your EV or hybrid while it lasts, the states will catch up eventually.
- Mileage fees have privacy issues and are complex because how do you account for miles driven in a different state?
- Licensing fees would be astronomical if they had to offset the complete fuel tax.
