I absolutely would have ordered a Maverick with a manual if it was available. I've been forced into automatics with my last few vehicles because manual transmissions are basically unavailable in new vehicles. Some models claim to offer them, but good luck finding one.

It would be great to see the Maverick offered in a regular cab with a longer bed and a manual. I know it is just a dream, but a guy can dream.
Super Cab and a longer bed.

"a manual is just more engaging to drive" illustrates why Ford hasn't yet put one in a vehicle like the Maverick. Simply put, the Maverick is not designed in any way (at least in hybrid trim) to be engaging, rather it is designed to efficiently get between points, because that's what extensive market research and sales data has supported that people want.

In Ford's view, if you want a manual transmission so that you feel more involved in the driving process, they have Mustangs for you to buy that fill that desire.

The comparative few here who love to say "I wish" would not be enough to make it worth Ford's time in engineering, certification, and support. Recognize that you're an extreme minority, and go get an old manual Ranger, or a manual Mustang, etc.
Sure, and that's just as well. For fun I have the '91 Miata and when I want to cheat death I have my 2020 750cc bike. Both with manual. My gas hog commuter is a '16 Buick Encore that averages 32 mpg (31.8).

I don't think anyone in here believes that manuals are coming back, and I think most of us know you can still get a manual if you want to shell out the bucks for certain performance cars. I think it's just about feeling like you're more in control. My 2014 Wrangler had a manual transmission that a reviewer described as agricultural in terms of how well it shifted. Steep clutch that would suddenly catch 3/4 of the way down, long throw shifter that was a crap shoot in terms of finding the right gear. No reverse lockout either, going from 5th to 6th was something you had to do delicately if you didn't want to hear a loud grinding sound that indicated you just tried to put it in reverse going down the highway. But I still loved it...bouncing around on big tires with each shift a production. I must be weird.

I couldn't stomach how bad the MT82 got by 2018. I opted for the 10R80 A10 in my 2018 GT.

Nah, it has nothing to do with any of that. It strictly comes down to money. On cars that still offer a manual in the U.S. the take rate is very low. That's why there are barley any new vehicles available with a manual in 2022. Engaging doesn't have to mean driving it like a sports a car. In the 70's & 80's it was common for just about every car & truck to come standard with a manual and the automatic was an option for a higher cost. My Dad had old Chevy S10 four cylinder with a manual. It was probably 100 HP but yes it was still more engaging to drive.
I do however agree with you that automatics are what people want which is exactly why manuals are on the verge of extinction.

I just purchased a 2022 Mustang with the 6 Speed manual. I have to admit that I was warned about the MT82 before purchasing the car but I still didn't expect it to be as bad as some people say. I've been driving manuals for just about 30 years and driven some great one's and some terrible one's.

The MT82 is definitely the oddest one I've ever driven. First it's very, very notchy which isn't necessarily a bad thing but it is surprising in 2022 when other manual transmission cars are smooth as butter. I have found that second gear can be so notchy at times that it almost seems like it's on the verge of grinding when putting it into 2nd gear. It's very similar to when a clutch wears out on an older car and getting into certain gears can be difficult. I guess also similar to when not pushing the clutch all the way down before shifting. I've been told this is normal.

What did you do to modify yours?

Every vehicle I have owned and purchased new since 1988 for my personal use has been a standard shift. The only ones that have not were purchased for my wife. I currently have 3 in my personal fleet that are 5 speed. My 1994 silverado C1500 is a V8 5 speed. My 2007 mustang GT is a V8 5 speed, and my 2008 Chevy HHR LS wagon is a 5 speed.

The 67 barracuda I am building is a 408 stroked small block 4 speed. The 69 barracuda I am building with my son for him as a dedicated street strip car is an automatic only for drag strip consistency. The other vehicles I have owned since 1988 that were 5 speed stick were a 1988 Daytona Shelby, 1969 Charger R/T 440, 1971 Chevy C/10, and a 1990 Daytona ES V6.

I wish the maverick had something other than the damn "dial a gear" in the center console. I'm not a big slush box fan. I would have payed extra to get a 3 pedal and select your own adventure gear shift setup. However this truck checked all the other boxes, so I suppose I can do without. I have several stick shift vehicles I can choose from to drive when I want, and in the corner of my shop I have another 1988 daytona shelby 5 speed that will also go together, so in a way I'm good I got plenty of 3 pedal vehicles.

My 07 GT shifter was awful when I got the car new. Kind of a wet noodle feel. My throws to 3rd and 5th I always felt like my hand was going to hit the climate controls on a hard upshift. 2 things fixed it right up. Steeda polyurethane shifter bushings, and a Saleen short throw shifter adaptor. I added a white H pattern ball for a bit of nostalgia. I spent less than $100 on the steeda and saleen parts, and got a world of difference.

My 94 Silverado I special ordered new as a fully loaded truck with 350 5 speed, and 3.55s with a P trak, standard cab long bed. It's an odd duck, but one of the things to make it more engaging to drive was a Hurst/Core shifter. Both vehicles are keepers.

The Maverick especially the hybrid was targeted to city folks and city driving and manual transmission do not match. It would be cool to see it as an option. Honda did this with their Insight Hybrid sedan you can option a manual transmission with the hybrid system.
The Honda CRZ could also be had with a manual. Insight used a similar drivetrain. Did not know they could be has with a manual.

Cracks me up to hear yall complaining about certain manuals being too rough or hard to shift. The first manuals I drove were Ford Toploaders, whatever they put in Berettas, and 3 spd Jeep units. All with worn out linkages or shifter cups, bad clutches, long throws, and loose pedals. My point is that no matter how rough they were, if I paid attention and shifted right they were butter, if I wasnt actually driving my vehicle and shofted wrong they would sure as hell let me know. I even had a Econoline with a shifter that was below and beside the rear leg of my captians chair. It required a slam to shift right. Still fun as hell and didt care one bit how "rough" it was. There is an old saying in the 4 spd community "If your arm dont hurt, you aint shifting it right". I translate that to "Grow a pair or buy automatics"!

Yes, starting for model year 2018 Ford did make a few improvements to the MT-82. And that is some good information that you supplied. I have seen several people on internet mention that the first step should be changing to a different fluid which I'll probably do in the spring. Although the opinions vary greatly on which transmission to fluid to use. Like I said though, overall I don't think it's a bad transmission and in fact I've been having a blast driving the car since I got it. My only real concern is 2nd gear and may even just be normal but I don't like the way it seems like it's on the verge of grinding sometimes when shifting into 2nd. I just want to be sure I'm damaging the transmission.

I don't know if you're referring to me but I was definitely not complaining. I actually have always liked how manual transmissions for different manufacturers and models can be vastly different, it makes driving a manual even more fun and exciting. I've owned manual transmission cars and trucks from Chevy, Ford, Nissan, Volkswagen, Mazda and Subaru. I've also driven a few others that weren't my vehicle but that not very frequently. Volkswagen's have the most user friendly manual transmissions in my experience. Everything about their manuals from shift feel to the clutch just works seamlessly. Not that the rest were bad but I've always told people who were looking to learn how to drive a manual to find a VW to practice on.
