I was wondering how much a loaded cargo basket affects mpg and what the difference would be mounted on the roof or on top or a rack (ie Yakima Overhaul) as opposed to mounted on low racks behind the cab?

I've been reseraching how to use a roof rack (for long items) and then move it to a low rack position over the bed for camping. Only solution I've found so far is to mount Yakima rails (drilling through the roof) for Skyline towers, which can also be mounted on a retrax tonneau.

Drilling through the roof? Yuck.
I miss rain gutters. (For starters)
I know what you mean though. It would be nice to have the adaptability.

I've used the Rhino rack Vortex Aero bar removable roof rack on my 2012 Focus and 2018 Escape. Nice thing is some of the parts are interchangeable. So I can use the one from my Escape, but I will just have to buy the rubber foot pads for the Maverick as the roof slope is slightly different than my Escapes. The rack clamps on with rubber coated clamps that grip just inside the door frame. Never had any issues with the paint getting damaged or the door seal deforming. Nice to have a removable rack that you can take off when you don't need it and have the clean look of no permanent roof rails. Only takes like 5 minutes to put the rack on/off.

They have many other options as well:

There is a noise consideration when you put a rack on the roof.
I'm looking to get bed rails for my Maverick so I can put my Yakima bars on them and a Thule box on the bars. Skis longer then about 165cm will not fit in the bed, even at an angle. The catch is I have the hard folding tonneau cover which makes accessories nearly impossible because they mount to the top of the box.
