I have nothing against CVT's except you lose some feedback as to what your car is actually doing. The first time I drove one on a highway, as we were going down a long hill at highway speeds the sound of the motor was decreasing but the speed was actually increasing. So I thought I was slowing down when in fact I was speeding up. If they can get rid of that problem and make them cheaper and more efficient/economical than a standard trans I'd be fine with it in a daily driver.

My wife had a Nissan Versa hatchback with the CVT and it was very go-kart like. Not my preference, but I can see why folks have fun with it.

Had to have the cvt replaced in my Subaru at 90k miles so I don’t feel too confident in them

I would imagine this is good news for all those that want the option to have paddle shifters.

You can't compare the CVT that was in your Subaru to the eCVT that Ford uses. Your subaru used a terribly unreliable system with "pulleys and a band" while the Ford uses a very robust planetary gear system.

My Forester has over 150k and the cvt is still perfectly fine. I kinda noticed it the first few times we drove the vehicle, has felt completely normal since.

Very true but still lacking compared to a “regular” auto

Is there any advantage to this over a typical eCVT transmission, or is this a replacement for manuals?

Lacking in what way aside from driving experience? It's designed to maximize engine efficiency by keeping the motor at it's most efficient operating speed. The reason they're not more popular despite being advantageous in terms of efficiency/economy is because most people jump on the CVT hate bandwagon and they just don't sell in the mainstream automotive market. I spent a day in a hybrid mav and the eCVT is excellent.

Not jumping on any bandwagon…I’ve lived it for 8 years. They’re noisy, sluggish, unreliable, jerky…I can go on. I’m glad ford seems to have addressed some issues w them

It used to be manual vs automatic now you have manual vs automatic vs cvt. You can weigh the benefits of each of them forever, it's not going to change the fact that "feel" is important to almost everyone in regards to their vehicle and people stick to their preferences more than they stick to cold logic or efficiency.

Maybe CVTs are unreliable but the eCVT is not. I also don't agree with your assessment about them being noisy or jerky or sluggish, I recently had an extended day test drive with a Hybrid maverick and the overall powertrain to include the eCVT was excellent. I would actually prefer it to the automatic in the ecboost I drove for a day the next weekend. Do you understand the difference between the eCVT and an old band CVT?

That doesn't describe my experience, or the experience of anyone I've known, who's driven the eCVT planetary gear system, Maverick or otherwise. I understand the Nissan style band is a garbage fire, but the Toyota/Ford system is great. Everyone I've let drive my Maverick has remarked on how amazingly smooth and peppy everything is.
