Because it's an Atkinson Cycle engine (as opposed to a standard Otto Cycle) which describes an engine in which the compression ratio is different from the expansion ratio to extract more combustion energy. On modern engines that's typically achieved by using variable valve timing to increase intake valve opening time into the compression stroke so less volume is actually compressed.
I know what Atkinson cycle engines are. What I don't know is why Ford has obscured that the engine itself is old. It was actually pretty hard to figure out exactly what was in the Hybrid for quite some time, unless you were already clued in on the subject.

Because they didn't feel like marketing it? Even Duratec is pretty meaningless as a moniker. The name has been applied to many different unrelated block designs from 4- to 6-cylinder, SOHC to DOHC.

But I could have found this engine if it was labeled a Duratec just by looking for 2.5L 4I engines with that moniker. Just like I can look up the 2.0L EcoBoost engine from the gas Maverick and find out what else its in and what's going on with the engine.

When the Maverick Hybrid was first announced, and for months after, all you could find trying to search for the engine was press releases for the Maverick itself and the wikipedia entry for the generic idea of an Atkinson engine.

But even Ecoboost 2.0Ls aren't all the same. The 2010-2014 was even a Mazda L engine as well. A Duratec Ecoboost, if you will.
And yet it took me only 25 seconds to find the correct Ecoboost motor, and what its in, on google knowing only the name, the displacement, and the release year of the vehicle its in.

Time to figure out what the hell a "Ford 2.5L Atkinson" is? Over a month. And people are still asking about it to this day. I've yet to see a thread asking what exactly a 2.0L Ecoboost is.

You have to assume they did it for marketing reasons, which can kind of backfire. If it was a brand new engine, it might be wise to let it mature for a few years until it's foibles are known. It could tend to drive some people away from buying it.

I normally wouldn't buy a first model year vehicle, except the ecoboost drive train has been out a few years and isn't a known stinker. Plus the 2.0 has been through a revision to correct previously known defects. I had no idea how long the 2.5L has been out or if it had a track record of reliability.

So the 2.5L in the Maverick hybrid is the same one I have my Escape?
Only if you have the new 2020 Escape hybrid.
What I don't know is why Ford has obscured that the engine itself is old.
Because a block, crank and pistons are only a small part of the modern engine. I've attached an SAE paper on a Toyota 2.5L that's the current fuel efficiency king. I expect the Ford hybrid 2.5L is similar.

This is an old dog that's learned new tricks.

The 2.0 used in the Ford Hybrids (2013+ Fusion & CMax hybrids) is in the same family, just as a destroked and with a smaller bore version.

The 2005-2011 Escape and 2010-2012 Fusions hybrids also used the same 2.5 liter Atkinson engine and they called it Atkinson way back then. So it's nothing new.

Its actually to reduce pumping losses to make the engine more efficient
"The Atkinson cycle is designed to provide efficiency at the expense of power density." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atkinson_cycle
Since hybrids have an electric motor, they don't need as much ICE power.

I respectfully disagree. I bought a 2005 FEH new and still have it today. While it is a 4 cylinder atkinson cycle engine, the displacement is 2.3 liters.

The Ford Maverick Hybrid ICE Atkinson 2.5L engine has a compression ratio of 13:0:1.

Does that not imply that it is a newer design than those other Ford Vehicles?
Iterative, and minor, changes are expected in engine deployments.

So it is different.

What exactly were the changes done to it compared the the previous version?

Are there any articles showing the history of Ford's Atkinson 2.5L engines with the changes that were made between versions along with performance numbers.
