I am on the phone with the State right now. Alabama lists the Maverick Hybrid as an electric vehicle and are charging a $200.00 fuel tax. Double check that your county has it set correctly!

Technically it is a HEV (hybrid electric vehicle). It's just that its electricity is 100% source from gasoline.

Nobody likes to pay taxes, but I enjoy driving on decent roads. Most road work is paid for by gas taxes and one of the unintended consequences of mandating more fuel-efficient cars is that less gas tax money goes to the state. It's not surprising that Hybrids and EV's are taxed extra when you buy your new plates.

Hybrids are not in my state. Only PHEVs and pure EVs......

I do not think you're talking to the right person. The Maverick doesn't meet the criteria:

Plenty of hybrids, especially the performance versions, get lower fuel economy than "regular" comparable vehicles.

Road use fee solution? Gross Vehicle Weight X Annual mileage = fee. Those that do the most damage, pay the most. Vehicles that weigh under, say, 1,500 lbs (electric motorcycles, trikes, scooters, mini "city" cars, etc) should pay no fees.

I believe it does reading the definition of EV,

"plug-in hybrid vehicle means a vehicle with a hybrid propulsion system that operates on both combustiable fuel and stored electricity."

which describes the Maverick Hybrid. You will have to pay the tax.

Plug-in hybrid would be a vehicle that can also store a charge from being plugged into an outlet. The only one that Ford currently makes is the PHEV Escape.

Indiana charged extra fees for both my Fusion hybrid and my PHEV Fusion. Their rationale is that I use less gas and thus am not paying enough in usage taxes by way of the normal gas tax 🤷‍♂️

Agreed.

It looks like they have it both ways there. Plug-in, but then the definition of a plug-in is incorrect.

It says "plug-in hybrid" is defined as "a vehicle with a hybrid propulsion system that operates on both combustiable fuel and stored electricity".

It doesn't specify that a plug-in hybrid plugs in, just that it's a hybrid. It seems like they don't know the difference. Also, they misspelled "combustible". lol

No.... That would be a PHEV. But they are charging more than even that tax. Plug in means hooked to the electrical grid. They even have a code....PHEV are code P for plug in. Hybrids are code H for Hybrid not plugged in. Mine is ringing in as an E for Electric vehicle.

Sir, I'm in Winston County, AL. Our roads are absolute trash and Gasoline and diesel powered trucks outnumber cars at least 8:1. Fuel taxes are being paid.

I was going to reply about how are tax money is not going to pay for the things we think they are, hence the political corruption we have. But I decided not to.
