Insurance looks like to me ~ rock or some road debris got ya.
I would rinse that area from time to time until you get a proper repair part installed, it is open to the elements from below so no harm no foul. If you were to pull the factory cold air inlet duct you will find there are actually two sets of openings for cold air but the factory inlet actually blocks the drivers side off, seems weird, but that drivers side inlet will let you see the back of that upper grill section.
Was running a clay bar on mine today and found a ding on the hood leading edge right above your puncture, a perfect little divot......good old DFW highways
