Starting in the 25's, the Eco engine is almost a total redesign,. Older ones had many problems; suggest you wait a year or two and get a 25. However, many older ones had few problems. So who knows for sure.
Only Gen 2 Ecoboosts, model years 2015-2019, had reliability problems. Early Mavericks are Gen 3.

In August 2023 we found a 2022 EB AWD XLT Maverick with a little under 14k miles at a Hyundai used car lot.
This was literally a day or two after our Kia Sportageā€˜s engine broke down and we wouldn’t get that car back for another two months.
After a test drive and looking at the CarFax, we decided to go for it.
I’d recommend researching the VIN for any prior history that you can find including recalls.
Also if you’re shopping at a non-Ford dealer, I’d pass on any maintenance contract . We signed up for an oil change/tire rotation contract though the Hyundai dealer and were told to go to a Ford dealer. Twice. We canceled the maintenance contract,
Otherwise owning the truck has been a dream. Other than recalls, no issues whatsoever.
Make sure you read all the fine print and of course the Maverick truck club forum is a great source of information. Best of luck in your search.
If you want to go to NY.LI just traded in a 25 Lariat with 5k on the clock to my local dealer, am picking up a Lobo today, its pristine, black with black package, 4ktow and sunroof, just did its second oil change at 5k synthetic oil, yes am crazy wanted a Lobo, with employe pricing going on it kept my loss to a minimum. Don't know what there going sell it for, its like new getting 30/35 mpg last summer got 40mpg a few times.
If you're interested call Jack 516 719-4000.

Thanks for all of the comments!! I posted the same thread on ford-trucks.com and hadn't got any response as of a day or two ago. This looks like the place to be.

I think I'm just about at the point of ending the research on vehicle options and go with the Maverick. There just isn't anything out comparable. I looked at say the Honda Ridgeline, but that's a pretty sizeable vehicle, has the V6 which isn't going to get much better mpg than the 4Runner. The mpg, even with the 2.0EB is a big plus. I've been reluctant to consider turbo'd engines, stick with old school NA. But you can only get the best of both worlds with a turbo and it seems like the 2.0EB is pretty solid

I was focusing on used, however, I'm seeing decent inventories of new, 2026 and even some 2025s and that seems to be driving some relatively steep discounts from what I can see. I'm tempted to go new. I did see that at least some of the local 2025s have a "stop sale," until June for an open recall I assume waiting on parts. Would that be the CV axles or is it something else?

Only other open item is tow package or not. Of course I'd prefer to have it, but not sure I need it. Small utility trailer used around town and then a 4x8 or 5x8 enclosed UHaul trailer. The 5x8 enclosed weighs 900 lbs from what I can find online, that leaves 1,100 lbs of payload which is more than enough to bring a daughter to college and back. Frontal area on the 5x8 is probably 25 sq. ft. (5x5) so that is below the 29 sq. ft. limit for the frontal area limitation for Maverick's w/o the tow package. I would have to add a hitch receiver, install seems pretty straightforward for a 2" Class III and I would just need a Flat 4 trailer connector. If that is plug and play, adding the hitch and wiring should be no problem. I'm not sure how common the trailer pkg is. There are probably 50-60 Mavericks on the lot at local dealers I need to start checking out.

So, I'll be off to start looking for Mavericks in the next couple days. Thanks again for all of the comments.
Try to find a Lariat with the Lux package. It will cost you a few grand more, but in the long run it has all the safety features, and things like trailer hitch, sprayed in bed liner, in bed features etc. Check out the differences by reading the Ford brochures, I think a 2025, or 2026 is the way to go. The earlier ones, don't have the front end sensors on the Co-pilot 360s.

Yes gasser Mavs are a lot cheaper. Everyone wants the hybrids. I see them $2-3k below MSRP regularly.

Big thing on them, the transmission is very picky. It has a non serviceable filter, so frequent fluid changes are a must. dont do the 150k service unless you want to buy a new transmission down the line.

Bare minimum, stick to the 30k service interval. Some here recommend doing the first change at just 10k, then the second at 30k, to get the break in material out ASAP. I've seen some of the 10k interval fluid and it is NASTY. Many also recommend doing the RDU and PTU on the same schedule for similar reasons, plus those were often underfilled from the factory. DOnt know if Ford ever fixed that.

Plus side, it is easy to do and the fluid is very cheap. There are several guides here on how to do it yourself.

Some axles have gone bad, its a lot more common on Hybrids, if you do have one go bad and cant get it warrantied you can also upgrade to Tremor axles to resolve the issue. But most of the boosts here with bad axles are either lifted or are somehow modified. There have been some stock failures but its a lot rarer then hybrid failures.

Neither the hitch nor the spray in bedliner or even the in bed features require lariat lux. All can be found on XLT and even XL models.
They didn't make Mavericks in 2015-2019 Gen 2 started in 2025
Incorrect. The 2.0 ecoboost was redesigned in 2019 to prevent the coolant intrusion issues.

" For the 2020 model year, the engine block was updated to use drilled cylinder coolant passages instead of a slit between the cylinders. This largely corrected remaining coolant intrusion issues for the engine. "

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_EcoBoost_engine#2.0_L_EcoBoost_Engine_(2022–present)

The gen 2 twin scroll ecoboost was introduced in 2015, but gen 1 ecoboosts were still used until 2018. The engine used in the 22-24 mav is the gen 2.5 design that fixes the coolant issues. The 25+ use the gen 3 MPC design with twin injection.

Or try to get a brand new 2025 left over. Some dealers have 2025 inventory at the parking lot

No kidding. Ecoboost is the name of an engine, and that was the subject of my post.

The Gen 2 2.0 Ecoboost engine was 2015-2019. Gen 3 was 2020-2024, which was in the Gen 1 Maverick. Gen 4 is 2025+, in the Gen 2 Maverick.

Make sense? The context of what you quoted is where I was commenting about an incorrect statement about the reliability of the Ecoboost engine in Mavericks prior to 2025, which was the Gen 3 Ecoboost. (or 2.5 if you want to count it that way...)

You're picking up a Lobo with 4K tow package? I don't think so. Maybe one with a 2K hitch...

LOBO doesn't have tow package, Lariat I traded has black package, sunroof and 4k tow.
Lobo only has full spare and mats, It don't need anything else has everything in 702 premium package.

Understood. (y) The way you worded your post led me to believe it's was the Lobo you were describing, not the Lariat.

Sorry, be more clear next time...
All good! I just wanted to be sure you hadn't been told by the salesman that you were getting 4K when you actually weren't. Enjoy the Lobo, I know I would!

No worries. The way discussion in topics jumps around in this forum, I have a hard time keeping it straight sometimes too.
