I thought about getting that flap, but it's still plastic and bypassed by a screwdriver. Even if the flap is metal, the housing is plastic.
A great, and more expensive, product would be the same thing but made of steel or aluminum; the entire housing.

On the topic of a safe for the Mav, Harbor Freight sells this little safe for $25 that ALMOST fits in the cubby between the front seats. It would be easy to cut a but of the plastic to fit it as-is, or just mount the door in the cubby under the armrest. It would also easily fit in the cubbies under the rear seat, and there is probably a slightly larger one that would fit back there, too.

You can buy a cabinet lock that works for 8 bucks.
Possibly as effective as some of the cheaper safes that come open with a good smack. i.e. prevents casual theft, the door handle triers and change bandits... but just jam a stout flathead tip in there and apply enough torque and it either rounds out the flat in the hole, breaks the cylinder, bends the lever or a combo. I know of some tire wrenches, older ford ones that would be well suited to it, as they have a flat end just thin enough.

There seems to be very few padlocks that aren't as easy to get off with twist or double wrench method also.

If you attempt to put anything of value in that you are nuts. It is good for tie down items. Keeping a loser out is the only concern with a lock.
In these days of cordless grinders, there is nothing "safe". It's just a matter of making it harder than the car parked next to it.

Nice BUT if that cover piece would cover the bolts holding the whole assembly in that would be much more secure. As it is now unscrew four bolts take whole thing with you. Maybe over kill but just saying.

Oh that cover is just plastic. should be metal.

It's like how bearproof is never really bearproof, you just gotta have some cooler/barrel that takes them longer than 30 mins to open, then they get frustrated and try the next campsite. With thieves it's probably something like 2 minutes.

It's actually 6, but who's counting? ;)

I'm with @Surly Old Bill. Any measure taken to make it more difficult is an improvement, and this is an improvement over the stock knob. The vast majority of thefts don't require prying doors or turning bolts.

Trickery is probably better than security at this point. Find/create a hidey place for stuff that they won't figure out.

True but why not make it better? It wouldn't be that much to do. Plus if door is plastic a pocket knife could pry it open. Most criminals carry a pocket knife. Okay I am guessing at that last point .

I never said you couldn't make it better. I have simple $9 key latches on mine and the effort to make it better for the small return isn't worth it to me. I use a hard tonneau cover so they're out of sight and out of mind, and all a thief would get out of mine is some tie-downs anyway. I keep anything of value locked in the cab.

It's like how bearproof is never really bearproof,
it's like the hikers and the bear.

One stopped to change into running shoes.

The other was dumbfounded: "That won't let you outrun a bear!"

"Ahh, but it's not the bear I have to outrun!""
