Young people really gravitate towards the maverick. I think it's because it feels like for the first time a brand gives a shit about us. So many products are either super expensive, or cheap but shit. The maverick feels like one of the first affordable new vehicles I've seen where it felt like the team who made it really wanted to make a special and appealing product. Like a brand wanting to give people a good, but affordable vehicle, that's kinda rare, all too often it's one or the other.
I'm not really that young (I'm assuming you mean someone in their 20s) but I get what you are saying. I had a similar feeling about my wife's honda fit. loved that car. I actually used to load 2x10s in that thing. I'd stick them out the passenger window at an angle and into the back seat/trunk area. pretty awesome little car.

"Well, next time try getting 42 MPG every day."

(Trust me; he won't know enough to know if it's a hybrid or not. So you can use that.)
yep. most people rarely do truck stuff with their truck but they commute to work in them getting half the MPGs we do.

I go to HD all the time. A pickup with a 8 foot bed is rarely, if ever seen. If you are really hauling material, you get a flatbed.
He's probably driving a Dodge...
Or tow a trailer. But yeah, ain't no way I'm keeping a pickup with an 8 foot bed around for frequent material hauling. Too hard to load compared to a flatbed (which has great side access to just drop a pallet on) and too easy to damage the sheet metal compared to a bed made of diamond plate or 2x8s.

Very few of the truck out there have an 8ft bed anymore. I had to order my other truck with an 8ft bed. Most opt up to a 6.5 ft and call that a "long bed" these days. Most of the trucks I see are 5.5ft beds. You should have ask the guy to show you his 8ft bed... LOL
I think 8ft pickup beds are good for two reasons. Larger OEM fuel tanks (the reason I had mine) and no need for a slider 5th wheel hitch.

I suppose if you also frequently carry a lot of bulky but not heavy materials (maybe rolls of insulation?) they'd be a good option, but again, I'd rather just drop two pallets with a forklift.

Bro why do people have to be like this? I don't like Jeeps, I've still never walked up to a Jeep owner and been like "Haha your car sucks".
Context matters. If it was confrontational then yeah, dude was definitely a jerk. But if it was typical truck-guy ribbing, eh, better not listen to the CB radio traffic.

I found out that the brodozer guys don't like it when I tell them I did more truck stuff with my Ford Escort Wagon then they probably did with their truck. One summer it hauled in a living room worth of furniture, a deck worth of wood, rain barrels, helped 2 people move apartments and did the essential to own a truck for thing "got a couple of bags of mulch"

Yeah, in my case it is for farm work and lots of oversized and bulky things on a regular basis. Also 5th wheel applications, and the larger OEM fuel tank. For the average truck owner if you can get by with a smaller bed it is a LOT easier to park when you are in tight quarters or parking lots. I end up having to park way out in the parking lots and it isn't a treat to drive or park it in a city setting. If you don't need the 8ft don't get it. The compromises are real.

"Well, actually, it came stock with an 8' bed, but I found I rarely used it so I had a custom body shop shorten the bed to 6', only cost me about $4,800."

I was loading some 2X4 and 2X6's at Home Depot, while I was strapping them down some guy stopped and said "Next time you should buy a real truck with an 8 foot bed"! A few good comebacks rushed into my head, but I took the high road and ignored him. Not sure why some people cant keep to themselves. What do you think a good comeback would have been?
I tend to give the opinions of mentally-challenged eunuchs every bit of the attention they deserve, which is to say... none. Ignoring meaningless, uninformed chatter is good for the soul.

Fits are awesome. They won't win many straight-line races, but the list of cars that are fun to get up on two wheels at legal-ish speeds is pretty small - and Fits are near the top of that list. :D

Best comeback is to shoot him a quick look and move on with your business or you could say 'well I can only afford either the truck or the wood'. I have found in the last couple years that you can get into some real frightening situations when encountering random strangers out there, there's enough people who are aggressive/drunk/stoned/arrogant/etc that's it's best to just let it all go.

The one you gave him. He doesn't deserve to be acknowledged. But if you must respond, just nonchalantly and sarcastically say "and I have your phone number? Next time I'll call you and get your approval before I buy another vehicle" . He'll get the message that his unsolicited comment wasn't welcomed

Twice I have had a lady walk behind my Maverick as I was loading it while at Home Depot.
They both said "Oh what a cute LITTLE pickup"
Just smiled and said thankyou.
I've gotten nothing but positive comments about my Maverick. Im sure some probably don't like it. But they don't see the need to make unsolicited negative comments.
