Is anyone here worried that putting these on will allow things to not dry out in that cavity if it's closed off? I came across a thread a few days ago and someone was 3D printing these (I think it was for the same spot) and some folks commented on not wanting to close that area off and to just rinse it out good when you wash it and let it then air dry.

I’ve never seen any other vehicle that had their rocker panels open to the wheel wells like this so it’s certainly not a standard automotive design choice.

It’s possible that the Ford engineers intended that gap for rocker ventilation, but I would say that given how easily it becomes choked with rocks and dirt, any ventilation benefit is going to disappear after a few years for the majority of vehicles on the road.

Or maybe it’s for wheel well aerodynamics and improved fuel efficiency. It’s also possible that they just wanted to connect the wheel well liner to the back of the doorframe and given the constraints of injection molding draft angles, adding a big pocket open to below was the easiest and cheapest design solution. Or maybe it’s an accidental byproduct of shared components across a common vehicle platform with different body styles.
