Hit from behind by an old Ford 150 while stopped at a Traffic Light.

Cracked the front windshield right up the middle, bent both sides of the chassis, took out the rear suspension, the roof was creased down the middle. Over 26K to repair.

Were you stopped and how fast was the F-150 going? Sorry this happened but it crumpling saved you from injury.
I was at a full stop. Not sure how fast the F150 was going. I suspect it to be a bit faster than the speed they told the police officer. Blessed to have avoided serious injury. Whiplash / Concussion.

It sucks that your truck is totaled, but let's be honest with the title ... an accident that does this much damage wasn't a "fender bender".

A fender bender is a 2 mph bump in a parking lot. Sounds like you got rear-ended at 30+ MPH which would total pretty much any car

Any modern unibody vehicle perhaps. For perspective, a few years back I was rear ended at a stop sign on my motorcycle by a Ford Escape doing 25 mph. Knocked the hell out of me, and caused me to lose my grip on the bars. Thanks likely to the dark side rear tire I was somehow able to keep the bike upright, regain control and avoid the oncoming traffic I was pushed into. Scary as hell! The trunk and rear fender were smashed. The 800+ pound bike was not totalled, and was repaired. My neck is still f'd up.

Kid said he and his buddy had been up late camping the night before, and he fell asleep at the wheel. Said it right in front of the cop.

That doesn't sound like a fender bender.

So great to hear you are OK . Sounds like your guardian angel was definitely there to help . Ford deserves quite a bit of credit too . My truck was hit while parked -by a careless driver and I am still amazed how it held up . Hope you find another soon and to your liking -take care -God Bless .

Yup, that's what they're designed to do - deform in order to absorb the impact gradually, reducing your risk of (or severity of) injuries.

I bet that if you could go back to that accident and choose, you'd rather write off the bike and avoid a lifetime of pain

This is sort of the same thing, except they got the "good" outcome : the truck is written off but they have no injuries

Yup. No crumple zones on motorcycles that I'm aware of.

Trust me..you got whiplash. You may chaulk it up to just soreness but hit that hard....This is from an old timer that's been in several rear enders depending your age..You're gonna feel it sooner or later. I would highly suggest you get a full workup to make sure....

That's what Un-Body is all about saving lives and reducing injury's. First production Un-Body car was the 1941 Nash 600 I remember see a Oldsmobile where the body was completely ripped off the frame and killed everyone in it as the front seat was in the rear seat. The frame body's were paper thin then.

Unlike old Chevys, the Mav has a proper headrest and properly-built seat bolsters to prevent whiplash injuries. And I would expect that the personal injury claims are way down when compared to the more rigid full-frame trucks that exert much higher G-forces on you in an accident. Since personal injury costs are tha major part of an accident claim, the Mav should be much cheaper to insure as a result.
